Spags on Fasano and Ayodele Trade

Mickey mentioned that last week on Talking Cowboys. He also mentioned some concerns with Fasano's shoulder. Though I guess its ok as he must have passed a physical with Miami.

Yeah, didn't he have shoulder surgery near the end of the season?...Same issue with Spikes in Philly I believe

I read somewhere that Fasano had "reconstructive shoulder surgery" earlier this off-season. I don't know if that's exaggerated or not.

Anymore it seems, shoulder injuries are more career threatening than knee injuries.

I didn't like the pick at the time and never really liked the guy, so I was glad to see him go. He'll have to go find another quarterback to follow around during the off-season. Maybe he can join John Beck's posse.

And you can find a guy like Ayodele anytime -- an average inside plugger who doesn't make big plays.

I heard this discussed some months ago on sirius radio. They said the same thing although I can't remember which host commented on it. Apparently it was first thought to be just a labrum injury, but turned out to be much worse when the doctor got into it. They questioned whether he would rehab in time to be 100% in the season.

Obviously not very valued by this coaching staff.

Unfortunate, because he was a high pick. At least he and Parcells can reminisce over the good times, though.

Now we will rue the day we traded him away.

We're ruing only getting a 4 (really the last 3, but with a lower salary commitment) for him. Nevermind that Shockey almost was dealt for a 2 the same weekend. Rue, rue, rue.

Yeah, it was a plate of some Italian dish. Remember Parcells asked him if he had any and he replied he was eating some right then. I forget what it was, but it was important to Parcells.

I still don't buy it. Are they trying to say they couldn't even get a 7th round choice for Akin by himself?

Supposedly they got a higher pick than what Miami was originally going to give for Fasano straight up.

Obviously, Fasano's loss won't translate to many wins but, personally, I was disappointed to see him go...I liked his energy and his apparent upside...That being said, if Mickey is accurate then busted assignments etc. makes it far more palatable regardless of Bennett.

what have you been watching? what energy? what upside? i saw none of that from failsano.

Actually someone within the Dallas media, don't know if it was Spags or not, said he had been told by some in Cowboy organization/players that Fasano's problem was above the neck -- wasn't smart enough. Assume he penned in as Dolphins starter now & their media probably crowing they stole one from the Cowboys, but 3rd TE Tony Curtis was overtaking Fasano. Admit being surprised by Bennet pick; he's got real good size & sure looks more like a WR then a TE when he making those catches & then running with the ball. Will be interesting to watch his development. Sounds like a guy whose hungry to be the best he can be -- said he wants to learn from Witten so he can become a pro bowler.

Mickey: First of all, look at it this way: The Cowboys traded Fasano and Ayodele for Pacman Jones.

This is the PR spin in its fullest... What next, We got TO for free. SHould we just release Spears and Crayton? I mean, look at it this way: The cowboys traded Spears and Crayton for TO.

Good point.

I think it was rather obvious we were trying to recoup a 4th round pick after the PacMan trade.

It seems odd to trade our young former 2nd round TE and then at the last minute throw in a reserve LB just for the heck of it only to turn right around and draft another TE in the 2nd round. All this while already having a pro bowl TE on the roster.

Really strange all around.

My point is the two trades are unrelated. We did not have to have a fourth round pick.

The key is that Fasano missed assignments and just didn't fit into Dallas' plan. Maybe they were targeting a TE all along and it made Fasano expendable. Not strange at all when you look at it that way.

He reminds me of Keyshawn Johnson in those Youtube videos.

I think the whole point is that Fasano just wasn't very good - not a good blocker, not a good receiver. If not for Parcells, no one would have given anything for him IMO.

To make the 2-TE offense sets I think Garrett wants two TEs who can block and catch. This puts the defense in a bind. If they go to nickle, we have a mismatch in the running game. If they to base, we have an advantage in the passing game.
