Spears has been playing solid football as of late. I don't think we have any choice but to re-sign him if he has another great year. He may "pull a Canty" on us and demand a lucrative contract he doesn't really deserve but I definitely think we should make an effort to keep him in Big D. He's solid for what he does. Great against the run and perfect for a 3-4 DE. Yay or nay for Spears?

did you see him last night.....he is svelt, slim and trim for a big guy. he is in excellent shape. imo, he is going to have one helluva year this year.

Spears is finally playing like a high draft pick... I think he played well last year, people forget its hard getting noticed as a DE in 3-4 defenses.

As long as he's more willing to sign a Ratliff contract than a Canty contract, I'd really hate to lose him.

But I don't think he's playing much different now than he ever has. He's always been pretty good -- more than just solid, but he's certainly consistent.

he is in the best shape of his NFL career. he is no longer fat and sloppy. for Parcells he put on weight. Now for Wade, he has trimmed down a bit. He is lean and mean.

I just hope he isn't one of those players, and without mentioning any names *kenhamlin" that just doesn't try as hard when they get their big contract.

Spears played well last year, he actually had a better year than Canty.

He's going to want to much money IMO. I just know it. If he wants Canty money he can leave. 25-30 mil is very reasonable. I agree that he's an asset to the run stoppage.

He's playing at his college weight which is great news for Dallas fans.

He's always been better than fans understood. 3-4 DEs do not rack up stats. Canty's numbers weren't miles better than his and look at the contract he got. He does look great though.

Well the market will set the table for the contract negotiations, we all know that... But Spears definitely has the talent you want in a 3-4 DE.

Exactly, see my original post.

I think a lot depends on how Igor does with his 1st year in Big D, and obviously Spears' contract demands. Those 3-4 DE's aren't that easy to find so it's almost a must that we re-sign him.

Depending with what happens with the CBA, Spears may not be an UFA after this season.

Still like the idea of Wilfork coming in and Rat sliding on over if Spears wants to much money.

Yep, I remember seeing all the DL doing drills below us before a game in '06 and thinking that he was bigger than Ferguson -- and not in a good way. IIRC he said on Irvin's show last week that he got as high as 340 in years past. Now he looks a LOT better. He's still plenty big and strong, just not a fat slob anymore.

That said, I'm wary of him being motivated by the money. He's always seemed like a guy who was playing for a contract as much as because he loved the game IMO. Like theo said, if Spears wants a Rat contract, fine. But if someone offers him a Canty contract, adios.

I don't see that happening...

#1 the money Wilfork will want will be crazy.

#2 Rat has made a name for himself at NT, it's the position he knows and has mastered. I can't see him wanting to move to 3-4 DE.

If push came to shove I think you'd see a 2nd tier 3-4 DE be brought in plus I would think that a 3-4 end (and NT) will be drafted next April.
