Spears Haters

you want names of DE's that put up those stats I thought you wanted what I wanted from spears.... Okay Igot you hold up...

Shaun Ellis Jets

49 tackles 5 Sacks

Chris Canty Cowboys

43 tackles 4 sacks

Igor Olshanksy Chargers

49 tackles 4 sacks

Ty Warren Pat's

53 tackles 4 sacks

IDK anymore 3-4 teams but if you know some I will look up stats
I'm actually shocked you looked up stats. I'm proud of you. Now do they all play on the same side? Do they all come out on obvious passing downs? That matters more than just the standard numbers they put up.

Of those guys, I do tend to think Warren's career path most closely matches Spears. Meaning it took awhile before the light went on and he put it all together.

No but I want to see him get more pressure on the QB like I stated atleast 3.5 -4 sacks isn't 2 much to ask for.
Actually I believe it is when his opportunities are limited and his primary role is to stop the run. But then I look at the total picture when determining how I feel about a player...regardless of draft position.

But that would have been like us drafting DWare and him only playing on passing downs and being a pass rush specialist

IDK total snaps played.

Rookie in 2005. OK.
Did not improve much in 2006.
Did improve SOME in 2007- after all his talk about how the new system would be so great for him.
So frankly I am NOT that impressed with 2008 so far. Lets see how he does against some GOOD O lines.
He has STILL underacheived for the 20th pick in the first rd- for what a first rd pick SHOULD give you.
Now if he keeps this up all year then he would have FINALLY- in his FOURTH YEAR- acheived what was expected of him.

Sooooooooooooo we are singing the praises of a one trick pony who is good against the run but garbage on passing downs? I fail to see how that is living up to the expectations of a first round pick.

Yes, I've been all over spears since he's been here. No, not because I think he should be getting 1094810 sacks per season, though DBair will tell you that's what I was looking for. But the job of the DE in the 3-4 is to either disrupt or command that you roll line coverage to him, thus freeing up your LBs to make plays against TEs. Spears is unfortunately easily contained by a guard on a passing down, allowing a tackle to get out on a LB rushing from the corner. Hopefully that will change - he looks a little more alive this year. I'll wait for the season though, he's had some good preseasons before.

I think that is a little unfair, because Spears is not in on passing downs. He does not just let loose and start a pass rush. His job is play the run.. maintain his area and occupy would be blockers so the LB's can make the play. He does his job very very well. Who know what spears can do when it comes to rushing the passer, that has not been his role on this D.

Now someone is going to chime in and say that if he was any good at rushing the passer, that he would be in there on 3rd downs. Even though that could be true, it could also be false. For example, Lets say Spears and hatcher are equal when it comes to rushing the passer, but Spears is far better playing the run than hatcher.. then you have Spears play the run and Hatcher rush the passer to keep both guys fresh, its a called a rotation for a reason.

Bottom line, Spears is a very good player and we are lucky to have him.

You haters need to eat some crow.

1. Who here "Hates" Spears, really? STHU with the "Hater" crap. No one "Hates" Spears. Disappointed in a first round pick not performing is not the same thing as "Hating". Grow up.

2. It's the preseason. Lets see how he does after 16 REGULAR SEASON games. Just like some of you mental midgets like to disregard anything negative cuz "it's just a preseason game", the same goes for the positive.

Crow Eaten. He looks poised to make the next step. He has been a dominant force in every game so far this preseason, even though Tank has gotten most of the hype. I'm ready for him to become the Richard Seymour that Parcells thought he would be.

how does that happen when he is hardly ever on the field for a passing down?

Whoa their Champ... It's just a figure of speech. I think "grow up" is a little extreme. And, you are wrong, there are Spears haters -- just look at some of the posts above

And yes, it is the preseason. I didn't forget. But I am happy when people make plays in the PS b/c you play like you practice. If you don't realize that, you've got some growing up to do

Only to clods that thought he was gonna get 12-15 sacks a yr as a 3-4 DE

To everyone else with any sense, he's been fine....

Let's make sure we keep everything civil. We can debate but make sure we don’t stoop to personal attacks.

I think Spears needs to start because other than him and Canty, I question our front 7's ability to stop the run. The inside linebackers are either old (Thomas), not instinctive (James),or slow (James again).

and there is a reason why he isnt on passing down anymore. Spears overall is a pretty solid DE in our 3-4 scheme, could he better in a 4-3? perhaps, but the fact for being a 1st round pick he just isnt the sexy type 1st rounder we all want.
