Spears Hinting He's On The Block?
Posted by jellis at 4/19/2010 5:04 PM CDT on truebluefanclub.com

By protecting him with the original draft pick tender of $1.226 million, the Cowboys all but guaranteed Marcus Spears wouldn't sign an offer sheet as a restricted free agent.

But now that Spears has signed his deal, which will pay him just over $500,000 less than backups Stephen Bowen and Jason Hatcher this season, the Cowboys could trade him to another team for less than the first-round pick they used on him back in 2005.

Without offering any details, Spears tweeted the following this afternoon:

"I don't think I'll be leaving Dallas but if I do i will miss this place and I'll miss the true blue fans but whatever God has it will be"

Does he know something we don't?

What? This post makes zero sense...........damn mouse.

By saying he doesnt think he'll be leaving? That comment could have been taken out of context like someone asking if he thinks he'll be traded.

Did he miss the bolded part?

Seven is right, this makes no damn sense.

Yeh I usually dont post to much. I just like to read the comments. But I saw this on the blog and was surprised it wasnt mentioned on here at all..

I'm not sure where that post by him gives us any indication that he believes he's leaving or knows he is or anything like that.

He says he doesn't think he's going anywhere and then proceeds in a just in case manner. That is no more confirmation that he might get traded then if I said I think he might get traded.

I agree that you could take this post 2 ways. One is that it says absolutely nothing or the other which I happen to believe is that he said it for a reason. Either They have told him that if the right opportunity presents itself we might be looking to trade you. We respect what you have done for us and want to be upfront. But we are not going to give you away for nothing... Either way why post something like that without at least thinking there is going to be a good possibility.

Hope he doesn't get traded. The guy has character :)

I like him too, always enjoyed him in Choice's videos but if sending him to miami as part of a deal could help us move up and grab thomas then im all for it.

I don't see the purpose in telling a player, "if the right deal comes a long we might trade you." That just doesn't seem like something they would do. That sounds like a Commanders move.

or I guess he is hearing it through the media and is just saying something because he has no idea what is going to happen

He will stay. He was pretty good last year and now he will be playing for the check. Plus it's another year in our system.

NOW, if we can package him for something that really helps us, I'm all for it.

I think Bowen will win the job.

I'd trade Spears for a 4th or 5th. I know someone is going to outbid us next year for him. May as well get something.

I agree. I think he plays out his contract and then goes somewhere else as a DT/DE after next season.

I disagree with you on that. To me its the same as releasing Flo and Hamlin so early. It was a good gesture on their part to give them a head start on finding a job. And it wouldn't be completely out of the norm to give a guy a " heads up"

The Commanders don't operate like that IMO opinion. I think they just over pay for a guy one year and realize how stupid it was and release him when noone will take on the contract.

Or his agent. If the Cowboys have been in talks at all with any other team, his agent would likely find out.

Do you think the Cowboys went to Flo and Hamlin and said, "we might cut you guys if we can't find a trade"?

That is like telling your girlfriend you might break up with her if you find out a hotter girl is interested in you. Of course you are thinking it and they know it is a possibility, but you don't say that.

I agree with that. I don't think teams go to the players with such information though.

How do you inform a player you are thinking about trading him and then, if you don't trade him, expect him to play as hard as he can the following season. That is just asking for a disgruntled player. That is why I said it is a Commanders move.
