Spears on Sirius (Moving the Chains)

So Greg Ellis, an established NFL vet, complains about being misplaced in a 3-4 defense, and he is labeled a whiney female dog, but the rookie who hasn't even proven that he's not a 1st round bust cries about the difficult technique and scheme plus lack of playmaking glory in the 3-4, and some fans agree and say he was misused? Okay.

Spears needs to shut up and be glad that the Cowboys had to rebuild into a 3-4 defense that year bumping him up to a higher position than he was worth because he sure as hell isn't a typical 4-3 pass rusher off the edge. It's attitudes like this why our defense died this year.

Well said...

Outside of the play at FS and possibly James I don't know of two worse players on this defense than Canty & Spears.

BOTH he and Canty need to be used different. Get Rivera in here and change things up. Add Ratliff to the mix and all 3 should be able to get pressure.

Canty was a 3-4 DE in college. It's not the 3-4 scheme with Canty (and I don't believe that's the problem with Spears), but our lack of attacking against the pass (i.e. blitzes and stunts) isn't helping matters any.

I was as happy we'd drafted Spears as I was anyone since Roy. But I'll admit I was wrong about him. His physical talents have never been in question; it's his work ethic that sucks. He doesn't play with max effort every play and he lets himself get fat. It's a bad sign when a guy doesn't make Parcells' weight limit in his first rookie camp.

Maybe he'd somehow get motivated with a new scheme and coach, but I wouldn't bet on it.

BTW, he always talks a good game. Sounds intelligent and impressive. But talk's cheap.

And whose 3-4 defense scheme should we blame for that?

he's right

the guy had the makings of a dominant player at LSU...he played in a very aggressive NFL type scheme under Saban...and we put him in the biggest pusskatore scheme the league has ever seen for his two yrs so far

he has the tools to be a very solid to dominant LDE...he could probably be moved to DT in the 4-3 and excel there too

I sure hope our next DC can bring out the best in Spears!

I was pretty pumped on the pick - but then I heard something that bothered me. Saban had told him to get his weight down -- and Spears told Saban he was going to wait and see who drafted him and what they wanted him to do. It struck me as excuse making for being lazy.

Now we hear he's blaming the scheme for not being productive. Excuse-making for not playing well.

What's next?

Makes me wonder if Spears is one of the players Newman was talking about toward the end of the season that talk in the locker room, but don't produce on the field. Seems to fit the bill.

I listened to that interview and will always maintain that Newman was referring to the defense-- and not the offense.

Spears and James both fit the bill.

doesn't matter what type of scheme you run if you keep getting stonewalled at the line

I have said it many times and so have others.
He is clearly a 4-3 tackle or a 3-4 DE. That was even what most thought out of college.
And he hasn't proven he should be starting at either position in the NFL.
Scheme or no scheme, he has made such few plays.
Cantly has shown enough where you may think the scheme is hurting him.

Spears doesn't have the quickness or explosion to play 4-3 DE in the NFL.
Period.

With all due respect to the posters here...

...has no one yet realized that in our 3-4 scheme, we weren't always asking our players to run 2 gap? We had scheme problems, but Spears was the 9th or 10th worst player on our defense last year. Scheme or not, his play was pretty rough.

Marcus Spears was on with Dave Shore today and he said that he hopes we get a coach that will turn them lose and allow them to try to get into the backfield to make plays.

Next year : "If Jerry would of asked, I would of told him not to touch Rivera with a ten foot pole. I just play, I don't do the hiring."

how is letting loose gonna help Spears defeat blocks? is the new coach supposed to do what I do on Madden, line Spears up 6 yards away from the OT, and beat him to the corner? except I do it w/ Freeney
