Just read from another forum that Spears has been getting extra work at NT. I guess we know who will be inactive as a result of the Rossum signing:

Junior Siavii

Hopefully this means more time for Bowen at DE; I like his potential if Spears doesn't get re-signed after the season...

Its a move that makes sense. Siavii only plays a few snaps per game, so its really wasting an active spot to have him out there.

They save an active spot by doing that.

What is probably being looked at here is identifying contingency plans in case we have to do a lot of roster shuffling.

If we had a roster pinch due to injury, we could get by a game or two with Spears backing up Ratliff. Siavii also floated around the league for a while and nobody else signed him. He's a perfect candidate to float for a week or two if there is a crunch.

I like what Siavii has done considering he was out of football for a couple years. I don't know if Dallas will re-sign him after the season but I think he's done a better job than Tank did last year. The only thing that worries me is that Spears lost some weight so I'm not sure if he's up to the challenge of being double-teamed at NT

It would be hard to not do a better job. Someone off the street could do better than Tank.

i dont probably means we spend another top round draft choice probably a # 1 pick on another defensive player, while we need a young top OT or OG

I think it's more a contingency in case we have a rash of injuries. The bye week is a good time to do that when you have extra time.

Siavii doesn't have to be inactive to play Rossum, anyway, Cletis was active last week. Rossum will just take his place.

Not sure what you guys have been watching, but Siavii has played well in limited time.

Rossum took Cletis Gordon's roster spot, so we don't need to de-activate anyone new because of him.

If Siavii is ever inactive, it'll be because guys like Jason Williams, Mike Hamlin and Curtis Johnson are finally healthy, not because we signed Rossum.

Isn't this a contract year for Spears? We may just be seeing what else he might have. I think chances are good we resign Spears unless his value gets crazy out of control like Canty's got.

This is basically what I meant.

We already witnessed the musical chairs game caused by Felix Jones' injury. We moved four players around in the span of a couple of weeks. Adding Rossum, who is yet another specialist, makes the forecast tighter in the upcoming weeks.

We have so many "protected" spots with young players like Hamlin, Williams, McGee etc. that we know we don't want to have to waive if the roster gets tight. We have to have several players identified to use in case of last minute shuffling. Preston is one of those players and he's been cut and brought back. Siavii could be another if necessary. He is a veteran, so he isn't subject to waivers and could simply be given a handshake and a wink when he is "cut".

The bye week is the perfect time to get Spears some time as a nose if we have to use that as a disaster plan.

Thats what I think too. They really liked Hamlin during the offseason and before he got hurt in PS, he could end up playing a regular role for the rest of the yr.

For the record, Spears will resign after the season is over. Spears is dominant on the run. Spears isn't too much of a pass-rusher but he's athletic enough to deflect ball, possibly intercept. But the only way I see the Cowboys gettin rid of spears is if the Cowboys trade for a true Nose Tackle (i.e. Shaun Rogers) and move Ratliff out to the End. That's the only way I see Spears being gone next year.

Bowen plays the weakside, meaning he fills in for Olshansky. Hatcher comes in for Spears.

Which reminds me, I cannot recall seeing much of Hatcher this season outside of special teams.

I wonder if Marcus Dixon figures into this. Doubtful, but maybe ...

Hatcher hasn't exactly been lighting it up ....

Siavii down and Dixon up ...

Edit: (Sorry Alexander, you were writing about Hatcher unbeknownst to me at the same time ... Maybe us highbrow thinkers have got something here ....)

I doubt we even need a handshake and wink with Siavii. We cut him last year and he didn't get a sniff from any other teams. Now, a year older, and the stink still on him, I doubt he'll generate much interest

I've seen him on defense, he just hasnt done much.

Ratliff and Spears are by far the two most active of our DL's.
