Speed package

Jarwin poses no serious threat tho. Not at all. Dak and Rico need to work more on their connections. No matter what you say. Rico gets open when he’s out there. None of the other TEs can get open consistently.
Jarwin was wide open for a potential big play in game one but Dak had to run left and didn't have a good throw.

Jarwin had some good plays in the preseason including a terrific run after catch play.

Rico is more talented than all of them. Just less experienced in football. Rico has attributes the others only dream to have. Please stop the bs

Speed is a nice asset to have, but precise route running and good hands are the most important factors for a receiver (obviously some degree of speed is needed for every receiver). I don't feel we have to have a "speed package". We just have to occasionally use these guys and take advantage of their speed whenever they play. It works better when not advertised.

I disagree. But I admit I can be wrong here, it's just my opinion. Growing up I played WR and I attributed all of my success on speed. In every football game I've ever played whether it be organized or sandlot I was the fastest player on the field. I was never once caught from behind. No one ever ran me down. That is a HUGE advantage to have as a WR. As a route runner I can't judge myself. Of course if you ask me I'm going to give myself an A+. But do I really know? So I don't know how much of an impact that had. But the more I think about it, we're probably both right to some extent.

This speed, speed, speed thing sounds like someone is channeling Al Davis.

It’s an advantage to have speed, but what good is it if the hands aren’t there, or if the route can’t be depended on by the QB? And remember, these aren’t kids growing up, this is the NFL, and the discrepencies in speed between players isn’t as great as with kids. In high school a 4.4 kid might be covered by a 4.8-4.9 kid. The gaps aren’t that big in the NFL. Plus there are intricate defensive schemes designed to handle it.

I do agree. But you would think good route running and hands is a must for any WR. I just took that for granted, but apparently some do it much better than others.

Then why wasn’t Willie Gault as good as Steve Largent, or Renaldo Nehemiah as good as John Taylor? Not everyone has the same quality of hands, just as not everyone has the same speed. And not every receiver is as precise in routes or is as in tune with their QB. Jerry Rice had no better than decent speed - far from special- but is easily the best that ever played the game. His hands and his attention to detail are what set him apart. In the end, a receiver can still be elite without exceptional speed if he has great hands and can create separation with his routes.

I concede the point. But I think you used poor examples with Rice and Taylor. They had excellent game speed. Not like Cliff Branch, but still really fast.

It’s worth noting that the ability to get open deep and having a “speed game” aren’t necessarily the same thing. If a receiver can dupe a DB into even a slight hesitation he can run by him, and a receiver who understands tendencies and nuances, like Jerry Rice, can do that. A lot of receivers have similar and better speed than Rice, but there are only a couple even in the same stratosphere in what they accomplished, and none as good. Taylor, from what I’ve found, ran a 4.67 at the combine. I assume he was actually faster than that, but not a speedster by any stretch.

Really with Twill out, herns is the only non speed guy. Its play design and qb/wr communication that that will cause this offense to sink or swim at this point. They have the speed on the roster unlike in the past.
