Speedy junior cornerback Patrick Peterson will be remembered as one of L.S.U.'s great

I sit here and look for consilation prizes if we miss out on Peterson and it's like losing a chance at a BMW and getting a Kia.

This might be one time I could care less if Jerry sold the draft farm for a guy.
Have you had a chance to scout him yet?

If so, what are your thoughts on him?

Before we go down this road, did you watch Julian Peterson play at Michigan State 140 Tackles, 25 Sacks in 23 games after coming to MSt. as a JC and did you see Derrick Brooks, two time First Team All -American, 274 Tackles, Five INTs., 8.5 Sacks, at Florida State?

I only ask because they both started as Safeties.

In answer to your question, Yes, I have seen him play both this year and last. He doesn't look like a shut down CB to me. He looks like a guy who plays Zone better then man. I don't watch LSU every week, as I have already said, but I just don't see this all world CB everybody else does.

Lol, what?

Julian Peterson was a defensive end/linebacker at Michigan State. He was not a safety.

Honestly, very little. I'm trying to expand my work when I have free time but I got so many things in the works I dont have a lot of that to go around.

I have been focusing on small school athletes on the East Coast. It's not something I want to do it's just required right now if you know what I mean.

Like my dad keeps reminding me,
"Gotta do what you gotta do to get to where you want to be"

There is a interesting TE from Fordham by the name of Stephen Skelton I can tell you all about.:p:

He was a Safety in San Francisco when he started in the NFL. Brooks started as a Safety at FSU. This aint all that hard. The skill sets of each of these players remind me more of what I've seen from Peterson more closely then the Skill sets of a Deion Sanders or a Mark Haynes type CB.

Did you see either Brooks or Peterson play in College?

Yeah, you're backtracking now.

Did you ever see Julian Peterson play football in college or the pros?

Here is what you said "I only ask because they both started as Safeties."

And he never ever started at safety for the 49ers. I've lived in the Bay Area most of my life and have been force feed more Niner games than I care to remember. I've seen Peterson play during his entire career with the 49ers.

This whole myth of him playing safety was based off the notion that he was so athletic that the team could theoritically use him in that role. He did on occasion line up over a TE when split-out wide. But he never...never...never...ever started at safety for the 49ers or the Spartans.

As far as Derrick Brooks, he played safety only as a Freshman at Florida State. He made the switch to linebacker going into his Sophomore year and never looked back from that point and on into the NFL.

Oh BTW, yes, I've seen both of these guys play in college and the pros.

I don't really have a problem with Peterson, per say. I just don't see what everybody else seems to have seen from him. I see him as a very interesting Safety prospect. I don't know about CB.

I mean, as a top 10 pick at CB and in the eyes of most Cowboy fans, I think what many of us are looking for is a shut down CB with man to man skills that can take out the oppositions best WR. I mean, if I'm wrong, OK, but I don't think I am. I believe that this is what most fans are looking for out of a high pick at CB. I don't see Peterson as that kind of CB. At least, I've never seen him be that kind of CB. So then the question becomes, do you want to take a guy that high who you might have to play at Safety but has never played that position before? This is the issue I see with Peterson. We take this player, he has to be moved and learn to play Safety and the Fans are going to be all over both the player and the team for WASTING a pick. Seen it too many times. God forbid he doesn't turn out to be a Pro Bowl player for us.

It's not that I don't think he's not an good player or even a player we might be able to use. It's more a question of taking him at 6 or 7 IMO.

I already said I did. I saw him play at both Michigan State and early in his career in San Francisco. He was later moved to OLB and then traded. They used him in more of a Rover or Monster role early in his career. But, if you say he never played Safety, OK. Doesn't change the fact that the skills sets are the same. The way Peterson was played early in his career in San Francisco and the way Tampa Bay played Brooks in the Tampa Two defensive scheme required similar skill sets. The ability to cover, a less physical style of LB and good ball skills with the ability to cover ground. These are the same skill sets I see in Peterson. He's not a shut down CB so far as I've seen.

Because I have not seen that kind of skill set at CB from him. As I have said, earlier, he looks like a better Zone Coverage guy as opposed to man to man shut down CB. I mean, I'm just basing this off of what I have personally seen. It's not anything more then that.

Does he remind you of a Shut Down type Deion CB?

He actually reminds me more of Darren Woodson in his skill sets.

Its my opinion that if youre not impressed w/ Peterson than you wont be impressed w/ any prospect. He pretty much has everything you could want.

I dont think that is a fair bench-mark. Theres a lot of room to be great under the Deion bar.

If Peterson isnt your pick then who? Does Fairley remind you of Reggie White?

Yeah, that was a sarcastic rhetorical question...

He never played safety for the 49ers. He played the DE "elephant" in the 49ers defense, they then switched to a 3-4 and he played OLB.

"But, if you say he never played Safety, OK. Doesn't change the fact that the skills sets are the same."

Yeah, actually everything including the facts are changing conveinently with your claims when contrasted by the facts.

Peterson never played safety for the 49ers or the Mich. State Spartans. You simply misinformed or made it up.

As far as your other claims, you're simply reeling at this point. Peterson and Brooks were not utilized in similiar fashion. Brooks was a middle linebacker in freshly designed Cover/Tampa 2 scheme. Saying they are both able to cover is an oversimplified statement that can be applied to dozens of linebackers.

Comparing Patrick Peterson to two linebackers in Julian Peterson and Derrick Brooks is comical.

I'm seeing an alarming pattern with you: distorting the reality/history.

On the other thread you're claiming Ronnie Lott was never a good cornerback despite the fact he made 4 Pro-Bowls and 2 All-Pro teams at the position.

This is real simple. Either he will be the highest rated CB on the board or he won't be. I've seen this guy play. He's not a shut down CB IMO.

I guess We'll have to agree to disagree on the Julian Peterson and Brooks. I see them as the same kind of skill set players and I see Peterson growing into the same kind of position. He may play safety rather then OLB but I still see the same kind of skills once he's fully developed as a player.

I guess We'll see who's right and who's wrong.

I did not say I was not impressed with him. I said I did not see him as a shut down CB.

That's fair enough. Do you see him as a man to man shut down CB? A Revis, Asmugha or even a Champ Bailey when he was young?

I would rather see us trade down if I had my rathers.

Let me ask you this. Would you have taken Revis, Asomugha or Champ 5th or 6th overall? Cause none of them were taken that high.

It's all good when you can go back with 20/20 hindsight and start comparing him to the best CB's in the game, but this thing doesn't really work that way.

Hi all, new to the site but not new to the draft or the Cowboys. Always good to find disscussion boards with other Boys fans.

Back on topic. I don't think Peterson is at all like Deion, to me he looks and plays a lot like Charles Woodson. He just has that knack like Woodson does/did have to always be around the ball and come up with clutch plays when his team needs it most. PP just has that 'it' factor. He's awesome at tracking the ball in flight and once he intercepts it, there's a good chance he's returning it.

I'm in the group that believes his best position in the NFL will be Safety. I think he can be a good CB, but his skillsets will be maximized as a S. He's the type of player you want in the middle of your defense and let him roam, much like Pittsburgh lets Polamalu freelance and make plays off his own ability and instincts.

It would depend on what our CB situation was at the time but yeah, I would have taken Champ Bailey that high if I'd had a need for a shut down CB at the time. However, you do bring up an interesting question. I would say that the three CBs listed above as good a shut down CBs as the NFL has had in the last 10 years or so. I mean, certainly there is room for discussion on that but I think that those three are right in the discussion. As you say, none of them were taken in the top 6 picks, though I believe Champ was top 10, why would you take Peterson, a guy I don't see as the same quality of CB prospect as either of those three that highly?

Do you see him as a shut down type CB?

Hello Finisher, Welcome to the Board. I hope you enjoy it.

I think it kinda depends on how big he actually is. If he's really 220 lbs, as some have stated on this board, then I just don't see him being a CB. If he's 20 years old or so and he's already that big, even if he's 210, he's probably going to get bigger and it's going to be hard for him to play CB at the size he's likely to grow into.

Charles Woodson might be a good comparison. If he's a Darren Woodson or a Rod Woodson, I would be very pleased but I don't know if I would take him at 6 overall. I guess a lot will depend on his combine. See just how fast he is, just how good his latteral movement, his hips and his agilities really are and what his real size and weight are.
