From what I've seen of Spencer lately, he looks like he's ready to start in the NFL. He's not quite the passrusher Ellis is yet, but he's far better at the other aspects of the game IMO and has more endurence. Ellis didn't seem to have the same impact late in the season either. I think he could be more effective throughout the season with fewer sacks.

Ellis is still a VALUABLE contributor to say one guy doesn't deserve to start is crazy right now... I'd let training camp settle all of that. To me it's a GREAT problem to have because BOTH guys are still under contract. I don't see why this should be an issue really.

No kidding, guess they thought they didnt need that cause they only gave up 140 yards to Gomer.

I don't know, Ellis had what 13 sacks this year in what 11 games?

I don't think we'd lose much production from Ellis even if you cut down his snaps....Spencer is simply more athletic at this stage of their careers....this isn't a lynch Ellis thread, I'm just high on Spencer...he got a lot stronger at the point of attack as the season progressed and he needs more reps to improve.

Spencer is faster and much more athletic and with another off season to get bigger, stronger, and faster, he's gonna be tough to keep him out of the starting lineup...

well i think your opinion smells of rotten eggs.

Ellis is far and away superior to Spencer. Ellis can stop the run, go into coverage, and rush the passer.

Spencer is merely a pass rusher right now. I love his potential and working with Ellis will do wonders for his game. But please, he isn't ready to be placed above Ellis.

I don't trust either one in coverage.

i dont trust either on in coverage as well, but I trust Ellis a lot more than Spencer. At least Ellis has about 10 years experience to draw back upon.....Spencer is in his rookie season....the simplest fakes would jack him up.

Ellis has spent all but 2 years as a down linemen in the NFL...not in coverage....even now he comes out on nickel (as would Spencer). Neither is experienced in coverage, but at least Spencer has some speed to keep up w/ folks.

Spencer is improving by leaps and bounds in my opinion and WILL be the starter by the end of training camp next season.

This is something I have thought of here lately. Remember how well Spencer played at the begining of the season? I think he is well on his way to being great. What do y'all think about possibly trading Ellis this offseason or next for a big draft pick? Say a number 1, or maybe a 2 and a 3 and a 5? Not sure it would be a good idea as Ellis has tons of experience he could pass on to these guys but at the same time Ellis is getting older and may be reaching his peak worth with the season he had this year. Any thoughts? Is this crazy?

Right now Ellis is better and will be the starter next season. Spencer will get his playing time and probably more than this year. Eventually he will be the starter. My guess is the season opener in '09.

It's hard to pass up on the sacks and forced fumbles since they are bigger plays. Spencer definitely moves around better and I think part of his problem was getting comfortable playing the stand up OLB spot because he looked more comfortable with his hand in the dirt. But rarely do I see a player who rushes far better with his hand in the dirt than standing up if they practice standing up after awhile.
