“I want to be out there but at the same time I don’t want to do anything that would jeopardize the rest of the season,” he said.

“If we get in asituation where I have to be out there and have to do – I don’t want to do something that’s going to end up hurting me in the long run,” Spencer said. “I know that it’s a long season and it’s a lot of games we have to play. So I’m just trying to be out there as much as possible.

“…I’ve got to listen to my body right now, saying that it’s not ready. Who knows Sunday?”

Not exactly how I heard Witten speaking after lacerating his spleen last year...

He suffered a setback. What do you want him to do?

Is Lance Dunbar who has been ruled out protecting himself as well?

Let's see how it plays out before we give Spencer the Livings lynching.

A setback that resulted in some minor swelling over the weekend that subsided in one day, according to him. I respect opinions otherwise, but no doubt in my mind Witten (lacerated spleen last year) or Romo (broken ribs last year) would be playing.

Right, but as you are using caution to be certain Spencer is not Jake legging it or is actually thinking about the team, do keep in mind that he himself admitted he took plays off.

So it's Spencer's fault that the organization has never committed to him? Of course Romo and Witten should play--they organization loves them. Spencer doesn't owe Dallas anything.

The organization committed $11 million to him this year, and was prepared to sign him to a market value (around $7-8M/yr) long-term contract. I think the organization has showed him plenty of love. He just wants more.

He actually needs to play and play well to get a big contract in free agency.

Oh boy here we go... The man knows his body and the knee swelled up which has been verified. It's out of his control.

Then don't compare the two situations. They are completely different.

You're entitled to your opinion. But some players play for more than money. I'm not necessarily saying Spencer isnt one of them, although I have my suspicions. But Witten surely is. So contract year or not, Witten would play.

No one doubts the seriousness of Witten's injury last year...but let's be serious...Witten was able to play and only required minimal padding.

How exactly is Spencer supposed to play defensive end w/ a bum knee?

The physical demands of the two positions are wildly different.

I think Spencer is hurt and will be back as soon as he can. It's got to be killing him not to be able to play against the Giants on opening day.

I hear ya. But the man had arthroscopic surgery on July 25 and the recovery time was set at 2-4 weeks. Unless we all were misled about the seriousness of the surgery (which I concede is possible), it seems like some swelling that subsided in a day should not be enough to prevent him from playing. But everyone on this board is entitled to their opinion that he's seriously injured and doing everything he can to get back on the field.
