Spencer sounds like a free agent-to-be protecting himself

We haven't heard a single story about Spencer dawging it. He isn't back when we want him and suddenly he isn't a hard worker?

Like he pushed a button that automatically creates knee swelling on command.

Come on people.

First people complained that spencer faked an injury to miss training camp because veterans hate training camp. Well, now he might miss game one...so, so much for that theory. Now people are complaining that he isnt playing through injury? Playing through a meniscus injury that causes swelling is a terrible idea. Even if the team wants him to play, he shouldnt risk his career to play this game. Good for him. And it's probably better in the long run anyway, coaches can be short sighted. Playing through broken ribs is not particularly threatening to your long term health. It just hurts. Playing through knee swelling can end your career and lead to arthritis for the rest of your life.

It's a marathon, not a sprint. There's no reason to risk losing Spencer to a serious injury week 1. If Spencer has a brain in his head, he's also thinking about being healthy for his next contract.

Spencer sitting is likely beneficial for both parties.

He suffered a setback. What do you want him to do?

Is Lance Dunbar who has been ruled out protecting himself as well?

Let's see how it plays out before we give Spencer the Livings lynching.

Lance Dunbar isn't getting 11 Million $$

Which further supports my argument. If someone was trying to protect themselves so they could land a lucrative contract...who is more likely to do so...a guy who has already banked 20M in 2 years or a guy with paltry career earnings?

The point is...neither guy is dogging it but the arguments for Spencer doing so...not only have popped up just in the last few days but they also aren't supported by logic.

maybe he is fibbing to the media so that the Giants don't know how to prepare, then he shows up for the first snap?

regardless, I don't think he next contract has anything to do with whether or not he plays in game 1

Spencer is doing what I knew he would do. He was pissed that he didn't get a deal. If he pulls this all year, he's a piece or crap. I can't stand guys who are more about I, ME, I, ME, I, ME instead of the team!!!

I can't stand posts that ASSUME ASSUME ASSUME, instead of wait and learn what the heck happened.

Like, you know- the facts. Not your assumptions.

Protecting himself from what? A huge contract? You're not going to get paid if you're not on the field putting up numbers! I don't think that's it!

what I still can't figure out is why wait until July to have the "minor" knee procedure. The season ended in early January. Why wait almost 8 months to have it checked? Or was the player hiding his condition to get the contract or the franchise tag?

I still take an injured Ware last year over Spencer.

Well, me too. Maybe I'm biased, but I'll take Ware of JJ Watt and Von Miller. But, according to PFF and other sources, Spencer rated out higher.

Whether or not he was the best OLB in the game, he's always been an incredible player and gets underrated by everyone, especially Dallas fans. Just because he doesn't get 15+ sacks a year, people don't think he's good. He (was) a SOLB, so he provided excellent run defense and applied pressure to the QB. He had as many pressures as the top pass rushers in the game. He just didn't have as many sacks. And he was probably a better run stopped than any elite pass rusher. He still has 4-5 years of elite play in him. I would've locked him in to a 5 year contract after last season. We just locked Sean Lee in, and Sean Lee is only 2 years younger. People act like Spencer is so old.

Because they don't want to open up a knee every time it may get sore. They thought rest would do it but it flared back up in camp. Once they decided to go in they shaved the knee cap of whatever spurs had developed from the bone bruise.

So right.

I am really not a friend of Spencer's behaviour. IMO he must have known about his bone spurs along time ago. The way he dealt with the "injury" is not fair to the team at all.
Same goes with Ratliff. He develops into a major distraction for this franchise. I hope both are gone after this season (in Ratliffs case i would cut him right away).

But this is buisness - it's not about fairness. It's about money. And Spencers protects himself like he never earned a penny. This guy got 10 mills last year and will get the same amount again this year.
What are these players thinking ? That's 20 millions - and in Dollars! It's enough money to ensure that he, his children and his children's child won't have to work anymore in life.

That's selfishness as good as it gets.

So is it really selfish for Spencer to not play when he is injured or is it really selfish of you to sit on your comfy couch and mock injured players for not playing?

No he's not! He's a lazy sack and has been his whole career. He play's (played) just hard enough to get a contract and not a bit more. He's got all the talent in the world but all he want's is to get paid without playing. He didn't do a thing until last year, his contract year, and now that he's being paid $11 million he is going to spend the year on vacation because injured or not someone in this idiotic league will pay him based on last year. I can't wait for him to be gone.

OMG! How will he ever survive after making only $20 million in two years. We should start a collection for him!

Yes, not playing in a nationally televised game with a captive football audience in one of the biggest rivalry games on the schedule sounds like a great way to increase your future earning potential.
