Not a single player in the NFL is "Worth" what they're making. Not even the lowest paid player in the NFL. It's just a game. They aren't saving lives or giving us world peace.

You have to overpay, regardless.

Why are people so upset over big contracts and signing bonuses?

Ummm...that's supposed to happen, which is why the salary cap keeps increasing every year. You have a certain amount of money to spend, so spend it. I don't believe is paying huge money to guys who are old or unproven, but if you have guys who are relatively young starters in the league, and they will improve your team, then why not pay them? Why not overpay them? If that's what the market says, either you pay them, or someone else pays them. Most teams know how to avoid salary cap hell now.

I don't care how much we pay or to whom we pay it as long as the team is better and it pays off in the fall.

Gurode is certainly overpaid for his worth...so is Flozell Adams, but that's the market. We need a RT and a RG or we are in serious, serious trouble. You have to pay someone, and if the market says you overpay a bit, then you do it....you have the cap room....so get the players in here and get to work.

Danger! Danger! Logic overload!

What great Offensive lineman is going to say, "pay me chump change, and I'll come play for you"?

If you want to build this OLIne, you need to open up your wallet, and pay for a stud tackle or guard. Then you go into the draft, and draft another Tackle or guard with a high first day pick.

We're not saying to go and sign 5 high priced Free Agents, but you can afford to pay for 2 high priced veterens in their prime. Other wise, your QB will continue to run for his life, resulting in bad passes, resulting in no first downs, resulting in losses, resulting in us going more years without a SB because we're afraid to spend money on players, where the market is set.

We will have an OL possibly minus two starters from this past season.......maybe Colombo, Rivera, and the already needed G.

So, Ok let's not spend the money.......I don't want to hear one complaint when our OL is leaking like a rusty water bucket next season.

Can I puke now? These guys are paid and worth every cent they get. The reason is because they are making the person that pays their check even more.

Please leave the save the world and saving lives bit for the Miss Americas...

I think I let the good ole capitalist system determine what something is worth, and baring that I will let let the American economic system do it.

the Niners just gave out the absolute worst contract I have ever seen for a player, the guy wasnt worth 1/3 of what they paid......eventually that kind of stupidity will bite you in the arse

David

Yeah, I've been hearing that one for 6 years regarding Washington...what will really bite you in the butt is if you are tight with the money and don't sign anyone and have to count on rookies and castoffs on your OL. If we were at least returning with what we had, it would not be such a big issue, but rivera is worse every year and Colombo is not signed, and we lost our backup center.

I don't care about LB's or DB's or any other FA, but this team needs to sign a guy to play RT in FA....if we have to play a rookie at RG, not such a huge deal, but we can't afford to go into the draft without the right side of our OL.

That's what I mean by "spend the money"

CB, I'm with you....what these guys aren't hearing is that we're not saying "overspend" on worthless guys in their 30's like rivera.

Adams and Kozier are okay, but they aren't great players...Gurode is young and has potential, so we overpaid, but that was the market.

We are going to have to open up the bank and overpay for someone on the right side of the line...I don't care if it is Colombo or Davis...they are both going to be overpaid, you can be sure of that. I'd prefer Davis because he can be plugged in at either spot, giving us more flexibility in the draft or with guys who don't generate any excitement with other teams because we can put our best 5th lineman at G or T.

Sign a quality OG or sign a quality OT...then you're gambling to find 1 guy to fill in.

But if you wait too long and don't pay the guys what the market calls for, you're going to lose Colombo and have no one to play at RG or RT...filling those spots in the draft (limiting our options of taking best players) or with guys other teams cut will be our only other options.

Unless people want to plug in Proctor and McQuistan and then have jerks for backups.

It's not a lack of patience....no where in this thread has anyone hit the panic button or asked "What's JJ waiting for?".....the original post was simply asking why people are so upset with the contracts and insist we better not pay guys like that....whether it's today or two weeks from now, we're going to have to overpay someone worthy of starting or we're going to be lining up with guys who are not worthy of playing....my opinion.

wayne....

IMO, our inactivity has alot to do with Tony Romo and Terrence Newman. Yes, we are well under the cap now, but we have ALOT of young talent. If they start to really gel, we're going to want to keep them together as long as is reasonable.

It's about the draft, always and forever. The best thing about this ridiculous salary cap expansion, is that if you're smart, and you draft well, you can have a dynasty - no problem at all. Parity can't squash the importance of drafting well and keeping your players on the team. The 49ers have so much money because they have so little talent - noone needs that second contract. We don't have that "luxury" anymore.

It would be nice to make at least one nice signing, a RG would be best. But I think you've said it yourself RG isn't that valuable position - you were even opposed to spending a high pick (IIRC). Like always, there are more than one way to skin a cat. The way we have to take, involves planning for the epic contracts our own players are going to require in the coming years.

Out of your 11000 + posts.....you said something I agree with. :)

With the price of CBs in todays NFL....Newman is going to cost a small fortune to resign.

Tony........we're talking $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Butttttttt.....we better include in our epic planning...OH Heck!!!!!! we better
bite the bullet and sign a legit, experienced, good.....OT or Guard.
