WHOA. As I mentioned earlier, Nikki Finke just recruited Variety’s chief newshound Mike Fleming, and now the new duo are coming out of the gate with a massive story. Their first big report is that Sony is scrapping Spider-Man 4 after script and schedule concerns caused Sam Raimi to walk away from the film. The scuttled sequel has already been confirmed by a Sony Pictures press release, and the studio will now go for a full franchise reboot. New director, new cast. Details after the break.
Finke and Fleming’s report says the decision was made just today, and that the studio will start over with a “franchise reboot” script by James Vanderbilt. They quote sources reporting that Raimi said he couldn’t make the picture’s 2011 release date and maintain quality standards.

Probably a good thing. Those movies are awful.

Nah, the first Spider Man was good.

Spider Man 2 was awesome, but Spider Man 3 was awful.

I agree, I never liked the Spiderman Series.

I read an article that said that the "rebooted" version is going to be darker.

The problem with this is that Spiderman has never been a "dark" figure.

However, he does have quite a few enemies that are dark.

Venom comes to mind.

True, the first one wasn't awful. For some reason two isn't even memorable even though I saw it and 3 was dreadful. I imagine it's a progressively worse kind of thing for me.

What mostly stands out are the fact that the budget is so big, yet the 3d/animation/FX are cheesy as hell. I saw the first Hell Boy which most likely didn't have as much of a budget and was blown away at how good the effects and creatures were and Sony couldn't match that?

Venom is a great villain in the comics, he was in the 2nd one if I remember that correctly. Spider Man isn't dark but the movies were too 'poppy' and bright. But the mind set now seems to be, just have it take a 'dark' turn and it will make it better. It won't work.

Venom is in 3 not two.

Maybe they thought Maguire was getting a little too old to be playing a kid fresh out of high school.

I am happy ..... now it can be put in the same "world" as the other Marvel movies.

Hopefully they reboot the X-men and Wolverine soon.

I thought all 3 kind of sucked but I was never a big spiderman fan.

Also from what I heard on the radio, the talk is they are going to make the new one of peter parker in High School or something.

Reboot IMO is just another way of starting over and making more money but basically giving you the same story with a different feel.

It would really suck if they go back to the origins of it when basically everybody knows the origin of Spiderman.

But that is just me.

At least with the Star Trek reboot they went back to stuff that was never shown before like some of the academy stuff and Kirk's origins.

But do we really need to see another spiderman getting bit by a spider and making a suit and so on?

didnt matter they all sucked.

The once with Doc Oc sticks out the most because I hated it, I just didn't know which version it was.

I loved Spider-Man and don't think any movie has done it justice.

They would all make outstanding movies. Unfortunately, the whole idea for them making these movies is to capitalize on a name and it shows; they all stink.

Someone who loves the characters and is not enamored with the FX aspect of it has to come along and tell the story from that point of view, regardless of whether or not it will be a 'blockbuster'.

I was a big Spiderman fan as a kid and the first two were pretty good as far as I am concerned. Very well cast, from the villians right down to J. Jonah Jameson.

The third one was so horribly bad that it really deflated anything the franchise had going for it. Probably a good call by Sami Raimi to walk away, since he was against the script for the last movie as well and it turned out that he was right. You would think that they would listen to him after the panning that the last one received.

Just promise me there won't be another Brandon Routh "Superman" sequel.

I've loved Spiderman since I was a small kid and was him for many a Halloween.

Since he looked like this...

And caught Villains like these...

The first two movies were OK...the third one BLEW.

I have no problem at all with a total reboot.
