Ravens looking to trade Ray Lewis
Posted: February 12, 2006

http://www.sportingnews.com/yourturn/viewtopic.php?t=61868

The Ravens have put feelers out to see what they can get in a trade for MLB Ray Lewis, but thus far, some teams are willing to part only with a second-round pick. If the Ravens can get a late first-round pick, they probably will trade Lewis. . . .

C LeCharles Bentley has told people he plans to explore the free-agent market and is disappointed the Saints didn't take care of his contract issues before now. Neither side has ruled out Bentley's return, but neither seems eager to make it work, either. Bentley is from Cleveland, and the Browns figure to be interested. They would have to move Bentley to guard, where he has experience, because they already have C Jeff Faine. Bentley also could provide important depth behind Faine, who missed 12 games in his first three seasons because of injuries. . . .

Bengals coach Marvin Lewis wants more leadership from his players, particularly WR Chad Johnson. He is a magnificent talent, but he creates distractions with his trash-talking and end zone celebrations. Johnson admits he needs to be less emotional. Any whispers of trade rumors involving Johnson were silenced by WR Chris Henry's recent arrest on gun charges. . . .

Free-agent RB Ahman Green could end up back with the Packers. Green is making progress in his recovery from a torn thigh muscle, but he won't be 100 percent until after training camp, which hurts his appeal on the open market. His best bet is to sign a one-year deal with the Packers and re-establish himself. Unless the club drafts a back in the first few rounds, Green could at least share the feature back role in 2006. . . .

The Bears made big moves the past two offseasons by signing OT John Tait ('04) and WR Muhsin Muhammad ('05), and G.M. Jerry Angelo plans to be aggressive again. One target will be Steelers WR/PR Antwaan Randle El, a Chicago native. Angelo also could look to add a youthful player or two to an aging offensive line. . . .

G.M. Ernie Accorsi knows the Giants need a playmaking cornerback and that he may have to trade up in the draft to get one. That is something he never has shied away from. As he proved with draft-day trades for TE Jeremy Shockey and QB Eli Manning, he won't lose the player he wants just to hold on to a third- or fourth-round pick who may never contribute. . . .

If the Panthers don't re-sign RB DeShaun Foster, Ravens free agent Chester Taylor could be a logical replacement because he's a solid runner who doesn't have a lot of wear on his body. The Panthers also could be interested in power runner T.J. Duckett if the Falcons place him on the trading block. . . .

Because LT Leonard Davis has a base salary of about $7 million for '06, there has been speculation the Cardinals might part with him. Don't believe it. The team is well under the salary cap has been criticized in the past for letting young, talented players leave. The Cardinals are not about to let Davis walk. . . .

The Cowboys must make significant improvements to the offensive line to have a shot at the playoffs. LT Flozell Adams, who is coming off knee surgery, and Gs Larry Allen and Marco Rivera are on the downsides of their careers and could struggle in December as practices and games take their toll. The Cowboys need to add at least two younger players capable of starting.

LeCharles Bentley is the kind of player I would like to see Dallas persue in free agency. He can play center and guard wehich is something BP will like about him. The only question is what will he cost to aquire?

Shocking.

Why not? He's a player.

He is going to be expensive though. He reminds me of Damien Woody a few years back. A versatile player that can play C/G.

I think Woody got a $9 million SB.

Damien Woody is exactly why I want to keep off Bentley -- he's been decent but really not worth the huge contract. That much money for a pro bowl alternate? Not a great deal for Det. Now, I'll the first one to jump up and down if we do get Bentley -- I just don't think he is our prime target.

Decent woulda meant another win or two here in Dallas last year. We dont even have decent. Bentley would shore up the center position nicely for 5 years. Even if we over pay, its gotta be better then what we had last year. I would rather over pay for something I am gunna get in decent amounts, rather then just pay for nothing period.

Which two games that we lost would we have won last year if our CENTER play improved from 'decent' to, er, 'decent'?

On the other hand, you look at a team like KC, who has been good on the offense for a few years now, and the investments they have made on there OL have paid huge dividends. It goes both ways.

Well we should trade our 2nd round for Ray Lewis and Get t.o and LaCharlse Bently... Trade La'Roi Glover and a the 18th pick up to Buffalo Bills pick the 8th...
The Bills are looking for a D-Tackle... so La'Roi Glover is a pro bowler why not trade La'Roi and the 18th pick off... it's a 50/50 deal... you getting La'Roi and a another 1st round...

and trade Greg Ellis off w/ Romo for a 2nd Round draft choice or a 1st round if possible... to N.O Saints... Replace Greg Ellis w/ Mario Williams...

Replace La'Roi with Thomas "Pepper" Johnson....

Ya'll hear what my tag team partner is saying?

I agree. We'll shop FA but spend wisely.

Maybe that Giants game. Bad snap exchange.

If we dont' go after Bentley I will be very disappointed. The games are won in the trenches. And he is an outstanding player. What's the issue here again?

What's it going to be then, eh?

Well, we may not be as down on Johnson as everyone around here is for starters.

What kind of "investments" have KC made in their line? Other than signing guys they developed to long term deals?

KC is a perfect example of what good scouting, coaching and continuity can do for an offensive line. As much as I dislike Sparano, continuity is the only argument I can see for keeping him.

We really dont have that many players on the "downsides" of their career. Only QB, WR, LG, RG, Nickel Corner. We may appear to be old, but we really are a youthful team. We have Romo and Henson waiting, as far as I'm concerned we have nothing in those two. We're young especially on the defensive side of the ball, the only player that seems "old" to me is Aaron Glenn and he played like an all pro last year IMHO (Battling his own injuries, taking Henry's role, etc. Also shocked me how good of a tackler he was for his size) People look at Drew, Terry, and Keshawn and immediately assume we're an "old" team.

I don't think you can pin the exchange problems on the centers last year.

More to the point, it's silly to blame the Center for the primary problems we had on the line. It's obvious to anyone who watched the games where the pass protection problems came from, and fixing those holes has to be the first priority.

That said, to be a dominant team, we need to improve our interior running game and our red zone running game. It's not clear to me where the problem was on this line in that regard, and some of it might lie with Johnson, but he was far from a serious liability for most of last season. He was adequate. I tend to think the problem was in the guard play. It seems like we rarely get blockers out to the second level of the defense for some reason, and I don't understand why that is the case.
