Bob Sturm: Patrick Peterson one the Cowboys might get antsy for in draft

If Patrick Peterson slips to 5 or 6, should the Cowboys make a play to move up for him in your opinion?

Peterson is the one player the Cowboys might get antsy for. Unlike Amukamara, Peterson does jump off the screen at you, does have unreal return speed, does tackle, and can play off or press. However, I would not give up the necessary ammunition to move up given the many holes on this team. They did for Jenkins and Dez (trade up), but I cannot do this too often.

What's our plan at safety? Is there someone available at No. 9 (or a trade down) or do we get this position filled in later rounds in the draft. What are you hearing?

I don't think anyone sees the safety crop as very good. There is nobody close to first-round talent. Moore from UCLA is the best, and I think he might possibly be there at No. 41. He is a FS type. Quinton Carter (not Quincy) is pretty average to me from Oklahoma. I think the Cowboys really owe it to themselves to make a strong push for Michael Huff in free agency since they obviously didn't think OJ Atogwe was as good as I do. I think safety is a position where I need a veteran. Q Mickell is also someone to keep in your head as a possibility.

If Nick Fairly does slide due to his Haynesworth like symptoms, will the Cowboys take a flier on him the same way they did with Dez?...

I wouldn't give up anything more than 4th+ round pick to trade up. There is talent to be had in the top three rounds and holes to fill.

It might be another trade down for more picks scenarios, which usually works out for the best, but it's torture waiting for the Cowboys to finally make their pick.

I think if Peterson falls to 6 (unlikely) that the Cowboys will make a move for him.

I don't really want the guy, but giving up a third to go up and get him doesn't hurt you much and is well worth it if he's a player you're targeting.

I don't agree with Sturm, though, on how many holes the team has. We've got a lot of uncertainty at end and nothing at Safety, but there are plenty of options there, mostly including the players we've had there to begin with. We'll sign Huff and Sensabaugh, and two of our three FA DEs. We need an OT and an OG and another CB. That's nothing for an NFL team to have to fill in an offseason.

Talent wasn't the problem on this team. It was preparation. I think we were one of the stronger teams in the league the last 8 weeks of last year, playing with a backup QB and without the benefit of going through a training camp under the new HC.

I don't have as fond of memories of the trade down scenario.

I always think of getting Julius Jones rather than Steven Jackson.

Or in 2009, ending up with Brewster and Jason Williams instead of Max Unger or other better candidates.

I prefer when we go after someone we've targeted, like they did for Jenkins (I believe) and more recently with Dez Bryant and Sean Lee.

The way to win in the NFL above any other method is to Draft impact players when the opportunity is there. That is why we moved up to get Dez. This kid is on the same plane as Dez, but the other side of the LOS. He is a difference maker. Get enough of them, you win. Simple formula that has always worked.

Give me one Patrick Peterson and 5 warm body draft picks over 7 warm body draft picks.

That's me.

We weren't going to draft Jackson because of his agents and we tried to trade back up to get Kevin Jones.

Unger was already gone when our pick came up IIRC.

Well said.

That's anyone with any sense.

I agree. Anytime you can get an impact player you should do it. Assuming you don't overpay too much.

The Herschel Walker trade is a great example.

Considering we haven't had a great 3rd round pick in 8 years, I'm willing to throw in a 3rd for Peterson. We would NEED to go OL in the 2nd round though. We could draft Danny Watkins then sign Tyson Clabo in FA.

i'm not usually a fan of whoever the hot player is coming into the draft, but with this kid, i hear a lot of people i respect put their votes towards him. if we have to give up a 3rd to move up a few spots, do it.

we need help in the secondary and this kid seems to be just what we could use *right now*.

hopefully a goot OT will come to us via FA and we can pay some real attention to that need also.

In 2010 we traded our 3rd round pick away. It landed us Dez Bryant.

Is anyone unhappy with Dez and Sean Lee to the point that you'd go back in time to grab someone at that #90 pick?

I wouldn't. I'll take Dez over anyone who came after 26 and 90 put together.

Same principle applies here.

I will sacrifice that high 3rd round pick for a top 5 talent.

If the Cowboys value him that high then I see them trading up to get him but we'll see.

Stephen Peterman, Jason Hatcher, James Marten, Robert Brewster, Jason Williams <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< chance to land Patrick Peterson

It's a no-contest.

Sounds like one mistake compounded by another - and another.

Yeah, which is why I mentioned being more fond of moving up to get the players you want.

Seattle snatched up Unger two picks before the Cowboys, and then Dallas panicked, moved down for less than value, and ended up with Brewster and Jason Williams (ugh!)

I like Amukamara (/nebraskahomeroner), but I would be ECSTATIC with Peterson. I hope we get him, even if we move up 2-3 spots. If not, that's when I'd be in favor of trading down. Nothing ya'll haven't heard on this board already though. :starspin

I'm with you. Give me quality over quantity.

I think the draft of 2009 should be a clear enough recent example for most.
