Patriots | Springs contract update
Mon, 09 Mar 2009 07:49:45 -0700

Len Pasquarelli, of ESPN.com, reports New England Patriots CB Shawn Springs' deal is worth in excess of $10.5 million over three years, a source told ESPN's John Clayton. If Springs reaches all of his playing incentives he could make as much as $13 million.

I have to admit I'm a bit surprised he got that much given has age and recent injury history.

I wonder how much a guy like Bodden would command, for example?

Yeah that's higher than I thought he'd get given his age and injury prone nature.

From what I've read, he's been signed to be a starter in New England, so I don't think that's too high of a price.

The question is if he can remain healthy enough to stay on the field.

This move is typical New England if you ask me, sign and experienced (some would say over-the-hill) vet and rely on their experience until you can draft their replacement.

I expect them to make a move for Zach Thomas and Jason Taylor too.

the $$ is not the issue. How it is structured is.

Thats a hell of a lot of money for a guy that plays 8 game seasons.

They needed someone who has defending TO experience. Springs has played against TO 2 times a year for the last 7 years.

Wow..okay now I get why we didn't sign him. Those are insane numbers for a 33 year old CB.

Pats signed Springs before T.O. signed with Buffalo..

Guess it's one of those yin-yang thing. They can't play without each other.

Yikes, that's way more than I would expect form the Pats. Normally they are thrifty and smart.

They are hurting pretty bad at corner. I can only name two corners on thier roster off the top of my head..Hobbs and Wheatley..I'm drawing a blank on the rest...

They should have kept Samuels. This is one contract I can't see working out in there favor. (And if it does I will have some serious questions about what happened with Springs in Washington and/or what type of program Bellichek uses)

W/ Pioli gone, maybe they're doing things a little different now?

They brought him in first, then let him leave town and turned to Springs.

Probably means he wanted more than that.

If he's still available in a week or so (as the 2nd phase of FA starts and money dries up a bit), maybe we could possibly show him a 1 year contract that he could leverage into something more significant if he performs.

Like the Eagles did with S Jones (1 year for $3mm, if I remember correctly).

No, the Pats brought Brodden in, but he left town without a contract. The Pats then brought in Springs and signed him.

Over under the number of games Springs plays this year.

I'm gonna say 9 is a good number.
