Cowboys have four quarterbacks

They drafted Dak Prescott last month

Tony Romo is rehabbing shoulder surgery

The Dallas Cowboys have said repeatedly they are content with their current backup quarterback situation behind starter Tony Romo.

And they are continuing to prove as much with their actions.

Per a source, the Cowboys will not put in a waiver claim on former LSU quarterback Zack Mettenberger, who was released by the Tennessee Titans on Monday.

Good. Wait out Foles or McCown.

Not a bad idea, but you are going to have significant competition for their services. You have several teams that still aren't sold on their starting QB, much less their backups.

Given we are high on the waiver wire I don't see any reason why we aren't looking at some of these cheap guys that come available. We have the discussion on Mettenberg but Boykin also was released and would be very cheap. Bjoern Werner was another guy that would have been worth a look as a DE, not a 3-4 OLB.

If it doesn't work out, you move on. Nothing hurt.

I'm shocked you haven't asked Hill to name 5 QBs better than Mettenberger. Maybe if you asked Stephen Jones real polite like he'll explain his reasons why he is not putting in a claim for a guy beat out by Matt Cassel and benched for Alex Tanney.

Titans only had the guy for 2 seasons, what would they know, right? It couldn't be that he just can't win a single game, right? He's cheap and has a strong arm so that should trump everything in your mind right?

For those who care..

heh - i could see why they may, but as i watched the battle unfold, i couldn't understand the fascination with a 6th round draft pick when we've already got something so much more fun in a 4th round pick to oggle over. but when i saw him be replaced by cassel, any interest i could put forth at that point would just be a lie.

and i'm tired of living a lie. >g<

Why would I ask someone else? You are the one who claims there are all these good backups out there yet you apparently are unable to name any of them.

You and I are very much in sync on this.

But now, I think that this team's next backup quarterback will be coming out of Cleveland. First choice McCown, second choice Austin Davis.

Heres a question - If we put in, and are awarded a waiver claim do we remain at the 4 position for the rest of the off season or do we drop down to last in waiver priority pending other teams awarded claims after us?

That could explain our hesitation for putting in a claim simply to take a shot.

Even if teams view them as only backups, I doubt we'll be willing to outbid for their services.

If the FO is smart they will.

Besides, I don't think there will be as much competition as you think.

Who do you think is going to make a play for these guys?

For Foles, I could see a team who isn't set at QB possibly give him some money hoping they can find the Eagles Foles.
The Jets for example have Hackenberg(project), Geno(disappointment/bust) and Petty. I could see them going after Foles if Fitz doesn't lower his demands.
Broncos could even take a flier on him.
Still relatively young at 27.

McCown may have less of a market but I just don't see the Cowboys spending any money on a Vet QB after Orton.

Don't you think that if a team really wasn't set at QB they would offer a pick for Foles? I don't believe there is a market for him for QB1.

I can see Dallas spending for a back-up after Wedeen, Cassell, Moore.

Foles blows. Too many are weighting the 2013 season when Kelly's offense was a new thing for the NFL. Look at Foles in 2014 and then in 2015.

He sucked. Big time. I'd rather have Weeden or Cassel back.

The Rams have already taken the 6m roster bonus hit for Foles. He isn't getting cut. We would have to trade for him and take on a contract. Ain't gonna happen.

He was bad, but he was also playing on the Rams--they'll make any QB bad.

Behind our line and with our receivers he's a capable QB2.

I might be wrong, but I believe each player is considered individually..if we get awarded one, we are still number 4 on the waiver wire for the next guy we put a bid in for.

Something odd is up with that situation.

I'd like to have him, but I understand why they don't want to use their waiver position on him. Dallas is in good position to scoop up a useful player in the coming weeks.
