Stability: The Forgotten Benefit Of Jerry Jones' Ownership

Stability is obviously important...when you're stable around the right guys. It's funny, though, that a fan base can both complain loudly about the performance of an excellent QB and a staff that went, collectively, 41-31 over the last four and a half years and still find time to criticize the organization for not being *more* stable.

Fortunately, we appear to have just extended the right kind of guy as Head Coach for the next five years. Let's see how stable the next few seasons start to look. It seems like maybe we might be in line for some relatively smooth sailing, finally.

Everything looks stable as of now. It looks like Jerry has finally grown out of his immature decision making (Joey Galloway, Roy Willimas, etc.) and is more willing to listen to others.

However stability can be fleeting. All it will take is a career ending back injury to Tony Romo and this franchise will once again be flailing. Hopefully this won't happen.

My last doctor, I visited once, had 30+ years of experience. That's why I picked him.

He was a straight up quack.

Kinda like my friend. Has a Masters. Smart as a moon rock.

your Dr. Wasn't a novice, he was incompetent.

I can't speak for your friend but having a Masters doesn't mean you are (or are not) a novice, but based on your description it sounds like he was only book smart.

There is a difference between starting a thread "criticiz[ing] the organization for not being *more* stable" (a position with which you largely agree as revealed in your last word: "finally") and responding to the contention that Jerry Jones' ownership provides stability.

In the past decade we have had three seasons where we have achieved double digit wins.

Stability during this time period has not been a positive thing.

If they go forward and continue to have success similar to this year and are viewed as legitimate contenders than that will be something that would be worthy of discussion. Bringing all of this up after one winning season in the last five...probably premature.

Good god man.

Seriously.

Agreed.

Put away the "owner/GM of the year/decade/lifetime" anointing oil.

I'd say 'stability' is not necessarily synonymous with good decision making. I think we'll retain our staff, more or less, and our way of doing business in terms of developing players and signing FAs. I'd also say there's very little chance Jerry ever learns to pass up a big risk move if the possible return is substantial. That just 'comes with the dinner' with this guy, as Jason likes to say.

Well, I wouldn't argue with that. I'm only concerned with the organization, myself, anyway.

Well this year, the "big move" would be signing Suh, assuming he isn't franchised. But I can't see Jerry pulling the trigger without input from Garrett, Marinelli and possibly Stephen. It may happen. But everyone will need to be on board before it does.

This is very different than when Jerry went and signed T.O., blindsighting Bill Parcells.

So Jerry has moved in the right direction. And everything I hear coming out of Valley Ranch these days seem to imply this is how things will be done going forward. I think we can all agree this is a good thing.

Jerry has always been willing to listen to others, which is his own circle, from Lacewell to Jim Garrett. There is also a certain rationale to many of Jerry's decisions. He made a push for Galloway, when he wasn't injured and was playing phenomenal. He wanted to give Aikman his WR for a last push. He tried getting pass rushers for years, trying to replace Haley with men like Carver and Pittman. He went Wade Phillips because Parcells had shifted the defense to 3-4 and he wanted JG coaching the offense.

There's always been a rationale to Jerry. Whether it was the right rationale or not is what can be argued.

Jimmy was the one who hired Lacewell evidently he also listened to Lacewell who played a major role in Jimmy Career even according to Jimmy own book. Jim Garrett was in Dallas and retained by Jimmy. So it was not only Jerry who listened to these men

I thought Jerry and Lacewell had ties going way back to Arkansas. My point simply being, Jerry has always listened to certain people.

Yep. Jerry's 'problem' is that he's too tolerant to risk if the return is high enough. In a league that's based on avoiding mistakes, he'll take a down field shot every time he thinks he gets the coverage he wants. Problem is, he doesn't always read that coverage right.

I don't mind taking the occasional shot. It does give you a boost if you hit on it. But if you're pulling the trigger, you better be dang sure you've got it right, because going big and getting it wrong hurts you. Just look at the production we've gotten out of Claiborne to-date if there's any doubt about that fact.

They did so did Jimmy. Lacewell was hired by Jimmy and was even Jimmy best man at his wedding. Yes Jerry listened to certain people the same people Jimmy listened to, when Johnson got the job with the Dolphins he contacted Lacewell about coming to the Dolphins.

I will say I felt Jerry should have cut loose Lacewell sooner than he did because of how some personnel moves ended up but the reason Jerry listened to Lacewell was because he was qualified and regarded highly by Jimmy

Weird to be on the same page on a topic, khiladi, huh? :)

Splitting hairs in the grand scheme of things.

Literal is as literal does. JMO, of course.

Performing below expectations next year will bring back all the bile and despair surrounding Jones's ownership of the team. I am personally hoping that doesn't happen, obviously, but it's what I expect should we not meet with the same success as this year.

I love what Jerry, Steven and Jason are building. I applaud Jerry for sticking with Garrett when every one else wanted him gone. Jason Garrett does not seem to be the type of coach who will byrn out either. I am hoping Marinelli and Linehan are long term solutions as coodinators as well. It makes drafting players much more effective if you have long term offensive and defensive philosophys in place.

Give me a few more years of making the playoffs and continued dedication towards creating and maintaining good offensive/defensive lines and then I'll consider things to be "stable".

Lost in all this debate about whether the franchise is stable or unstable, is the fact that the author is actually praising nepotism:

This is another aspect of Jerry Jones and his time as the owner of the Cowboys that deserves praise. Since he bought the team, he has been the man in charge, but as the years have gone by, he has been steadily bringing his own children along.

I have seen a lot in my time, but this is actually the first time I have ever seen someone praising nepotism. Certainly proof that some fans--the Tom Ryle types--will go at any lengths to "feel good" about their team.

Jerry's ownership has been a gift and a curse, but I like the old man, if not necessarily his management style..

It may have taken him a long time to finally piece it together, but it looks like he finally has the perfect balance of having football smart folks running that part while he gets to stand in front of microphones and talk to the media, all the while still getting the credit for assembling this staff and having the balls to stick with it.

For me it's finding the next QB. Until that's in place, the future of this team is a question mark. We could go years and years looking for a franchise QB.
