That wasn't atrocious ball skills.

CJ played that perfectly but Johnson is 6-5 with long arms and a 42 inch vertical. When he times that well he's going to go over anyone around him and that's exactly what happened. It is not comparable at all to the play in the Broconos/Ravens game especially since there wasn't 30 seconds left in the game at that point and he didn't fall flat on his *** whle misplaying the ball by about 5 yards.

Reinforcing your point. From Sports Science

Johnson's reach might be the most impressive part of the video. Combining his 45-inch vertical, 6-foot-5 frame, 6-foot-10 wingspan, and 8-feet-8-inch standing reach, Johnson has a reach similar to that of Shaquille O'Neal's, which is apparently the largest ever documented in the NBA -- 12-feet-5-inches. That's absurd, but you can't argue with science.

So now we are supposed to get excited about a defensive back for catching a guy from behind? Seems a little odd.

LOL, went from "this is the only guy on the roster we have left", to "dang he's fast and did great running behind Calvin Johnson", to "he has the ability to be the next great safety!!!" to "I LOVE Heath!!!"

I love Jeff Heath. He certainly has the tangibles to be a great one. If he can become a student of the game we might have something here.

Me too! I still think he and Wilcox are the starting safeties before the season ends. I like Church but he is strictly a thumper; they should consider moving him to LB.

I think they might be exaggerating a bit. With all of the extreme athletes that have been in the NBA, do you really believe that Calvin Johnson can reach a higher spot on the backboard than all of them? Lebron is taller (6-8) with longer arms and can jump higher.

Calvin Johnson's arm length (33-1/4") is not exceptional for a 6-5 player. Tyron Smith's arm length is 36-3/8" and Dez is 34".

Johnson's vertical at his Pro Day was 42-1/2" not 45".

Calvin Johnson has a big enough advantage over 6' DBs, there's no reason to exaggerate his abilities.

Thing that was most impressive to me was his 8'8' standing reach, and 6 foot 10 wingspan. A ball just needs to be thrown into a general area for him to have a great chance to catch it.

Agree on the 42 1/2 vs 45 , but still that added to 8'8" is still very impressive.

Its funny to read this thread because my initial reaction on that play wasn't that CJ made a big play....it was who is the white guy with all that speed who caught up to him. Alot of interesting projects on this defense but lets not get carried away as this defense might break cowboys records for giving up most points.

He might really be. It's not like any of our other guys, even the corners, have great speed.

Like a lot of people, I was pretty impressed with Heath. Sounds weird for a game when we gave up so many yards, but I thought he showed something.

Scandrick is very very fast. He's the fastest guy on our D.

Heath should have been credited for that 4th down INT. If he would have stood up and ran with it, he could have chewed more time off the clock giving us a better odds of winning. As always, refs blew that call.

For those who can watch it:

http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-films-sound-efx/0ap2000000273946/Sound-FX-Matthew-Stafford

For those of you who can't watch it....Here's a partial transcript I put together:

Stafford **in near amazement** talking to Calvin Johnson (regarding Jeff Heath running down Calvin Johnson and pushing him out at the two-yard line):

Stafford, "Who caught you, who caught you?"

Calvin, "I don't know, I don't know...."

Stafford, " Shawn said whoever caught you needs to get his own Speed commercial."

Lions position coach showing in-game photo:

"I told you there was going to be a lot of air on this defense. Look, that's going to be there all day now."

[Note: Unless I'm missing it after the re-watch/transcript type - It seems this portion was edited out and/or replaced. It's quoted the best that I remember it after the first watch. The photo had two drawn deep-route lines towards the middle/mid-left of our Defense to the best of my recollection].

Stafford during final drive:

Stafford, "Let's go we gotta hall *tail* down the middle of the field."

Stafford talking about Cowboys Defense after his dive-in touchdown"

Stafford, "I was reading them, I was reading them. If they were coming I was just going to spike it. But they were like this [Stafford poses into a zombie-type slump showing what our D players were doing]. "So I was like...gimme that."

Quick takes after watching this:

Jeff Heath has great football speed. I really like this kid. He's smart and always in position. After watching that play again, Heath turned on his own afterburners chasing down CJ.

It seemed to me that the lions really liked their chances regarding passing deep down the middle of our Defense.

Sean Lee sounded like a hurricane in the mic when he intercepted Stafford and blew by him.

Per your last point I was hoping that Lee would just run through Stafford instead of trying to juke; not often that you get a chance to pound it right through a QB trying to make a tackle...

My God our defense sucks historically bad. It's so embarrassing.

Between overrated talent and a really bad, outdated scheme, I fear this isn't going to get much better - well maybe this week (Ponder).
