Stanback Practice Session

Someone called in to Talkin Cowboys to ask about Stanback's status. Mickey mentioned he recently saw Stanbach (S) in practice. S was running good routes and catching the ball the way he was supposed to.

Didn't mention S's back (or lack thereof) of speed. Have heard before that Cowboys can't cover S in practice. I would assume if S lacked speed they'd be able to cover him. So think it logical to assume he's got some real speed and/or other moves.

No one actually questions his speed. He's very fast. It's good to hear his route running looks good. Based on the VERY VERY limited time we saw him in preseason it looked as though he had nice hands.

I'd like to see him in the lineup against Philly. He can't do any worse than Hurd at 3rd WR.

No one does?

Perhaps you have not seen the infamous 4.58 time in the 40 link.

i just want to see him on the field

maybe it's just me, but it's starting to get more frustrating the more we hear about him b/c we are not getting opportunities to see it on the field.

but i am also wondering who it is that is having trouble covering him in practice? is it everyone? is it the 2nd or 3rd team defense?

i'll tell you one thing, if he is possibly making it hard on T-New to cover him, they need to get him on the field immediately

Or Nate Jones is covering him in practice?

He doesn't count.

Maybe I should have said no one seriously questions it. Or no one anyone takes seriously questions it. Or no serious person actually questions it.

Only problem is that Hurd is so good on special teams -- it seems like Sam is in on every kickoff tackle. And there's no way to really simulate that in practice to see if Stanback would be any good at covering kicks.

I'd like to see him, too, though. The position is new for him, but I have a feeling the game won't be too big for him. He's used to having the ball in his hands every play in front of big crowds in a major conference. I have no doubt he's going to surprise some people once he gets the ball in his hands.

Not sure if most caught it, but Jerry on his show Sunday was asked about if Glenn would return and if Stanback would contribute this year.

He basically ducked the Glenn question and went right into talking about Stanback, and how he gives the defense fits in practice. Plus, if you think about it, the NFL season is basically like 2 1/2 college football seasons, and towards the end of this year, he is really going to be a plus for this football team.

The only thing which make keep him off the field is his ability to read defenses & the speed of the game. Romo & S need to be on the same page so both must read the defense the same & also make other adjustments. Wouldn't be surprised if Garrett is working on a few plays designed specifically for S but that time is certainly closer now then it was very early in the season.

At least S was on the sidelines once so he can observe close up what it's feels like & watch our offense first hand. Bet he was told to pay close attention to things on our offense but maybe also on opponents defense. As a former QB, bet S is ahead of the game but still different adjustment needs in the NFL.

Frankly, I think they'd start him off in his first 1-2 games just running a few routes to get him comfortable with the speed of the game & maybe even making a few blocks when necessary. He might even get a chance to play on ST as well.

I think we need to put an APB out on Hurd on offense and Ayodele on defense. :)

He was still injured when he ran that. He wasn't 100%.

The guy came in 5th (or so) in the 100mm Pac 10 championship. You've got to be FAST to do that. He's run around a 10.4 100mm.

FYI, that translates to WAY sub 4.58 40!

And by the way, he ran a 10.4 without even a track background. That's phenominal.

No, it's true. It's on the inter-web and everything.

Stanback has run a 10.48 hundred meter dash. My guess is he can run a 4.3-4.4 forty. The times in the writup are probably due to his being unable to run a forty due to his foot injury. He is probably the third or forth fastest guy on the team. I was hoping he would come along because one thing we are lacking on offense is another receiver with some speed.

Actually, while I was typing that response, I was simultaneously thinking "why bother" . . . . But I was already half way through, so I thought "what the heck" :banghead:

I believe Stanback is on record saying he never ran a 4.6 in his life and that he had no idea where the scouting reports got hold of that misinformation.

I will probably be proven wrong, but I just don't see him making the field this year. There are so many factors working against him:
  • Swithcing positions from QB to WR. So much of the WR position is running good routes, and knowing what the defense is doing in a certain situation. He might have the defense stuff down comming from QB, but his route running is going to need work. Especially in a timing based offense
  • Hurt during training camp/preseason. He really needed this time to get a bunch of repititions in, and see more action in preseason. He is even further behind because of the position switch as above.
  • We are doing pretty well at receiver right now with our starers, and this is even without having Terry Glenn who should be comming back. Who is he going to beat out? TO (no), PC (no), Hurd (no), Glenn (no).
  • He isn't getting any game time, not even on special teams.
Barring injury, I don't see him making the field, unless there is an oportunity for him to get in during garbage time, and even then he has to be active for that game which could be a problem since he isn't on special teams.

he's the biggest self-serving-agenda-driven-idiot here and despite people telling him he's wrong and updating his information, he only sees what serves his purposes.

that's a TROLL and i long for the day we load him up in the cannon and shoot him off to someone elses forum to let them deal with his idiocy.
