There is a big difference between throwing away day-1 picks on reaches and spending day-2 picks on project players.

I have no problem using a 2nd day pick on a project player as long as we are using our day-1 picks on solid, proven talent, which we have been doing the last few years. They aren't always going to work out for us, like Peterman & Jacobs, but at least they were proven players from big time programs and were not reaches or projects.

Stanback is an exceptional athlete. Landry & Co. made a living out of turning guys like that into stars. If we can figure out how to utilize him then we may just have something. If not then we wasted a 4th rounder which is no big deal as very few of them are expected to contribute substantially anyway.

Good call. Not many 4th rounders are gonna make or break a franchise. As long as the staff picks him knowing they have taken a risk and are willing to allow the player to grow then I have no problem with it. When the staff starts thinking they have some sort of steal and a can't miss guy in the 4th round combined with all of Stanbacks other hurdles, thats when I have a problem.

They picked him knowing they were going to have to wait on him.

I love the Stanback pick, and I didn't know him before the draft, nor do I blindly praise all our draft picks.

But what we had was a need for youth at WR, yet no opening for a rookie. Nobody was going to come in and play this year anyway, so who better to take than a very high upside guy who can develop in practice for a year?

I just don't see how you can watch tape of the guy play and not love what he does with the ball in his hands. Add that to a great attitude, and it's just a matter of time until he becomes a pretty good player.

I agree. The same people undoubtedly wanted to get rid of Adams a few years ago, and Gurode, and Romo. They are spendthrifts, unwilling to establish a savings account.

:welcome:

Some good points there. Stanback needs some time, and we seem to be able to afford it right now.

WOW with all the QBs going down we should move him back to his original position, trade him and maybe get a 2nd rd pick for him....;)

the point is: Jerry & Co tried this drafting philosophy in the past and it almost never worked. This philosophy is based on drafting a player with superior size & speed but very little experience or poor competition. Jerry often felt he was "out smarting" the other teams in NFL but reality is that most valuable observers understand that if they didnt do it in college...they most likely wont at NFL level which is 100 times more difficult. Patrick Crayton played WR at college level....Stanback didnt. Deveren Johnson (6'4" 215 lbs out of Sacret Heart - who couldnt play a lick of WR at pro level) was the poster child of that failed drafting philosophy.

what exactly is an internet radio station owner? do you just download a freeware off the net, then there you go? you sounded like someone who is either in elementary school or jr. high from the way you talk, i cannot imagine that your so called radio station actually has any meaningful listenership.

There's a big difference between intelligent and motivated players who are making a position change like Stanback versus talented but stupid and/or lazy players like Derek Ross, Kareem Larrimore, and Willie Blade.

It's amazing how you can look at a 4-0 team that has just brutalized every opponent so far, and see nothing but gloom and doom... what's funny, though, is that you focus on a freakin' 4th round draft pick as your "evidence" that we're in deep doo-doo...
what the heck are you talking about? I simply said this team is not complete and this next draft is very important to fill some upcoming holes. Owens will not be here forever...Ferguson will not be here forever....Henry is no spring chicken...Terry Glenn will probably not be here next year and maybe not this year....what is wrong with pointing out that our 90s dynasty crumbled because we began to throw away draft picks? which by the way is starting to catch up to philly

Why aren't people talking about Doug Free and James Marten being busts since they haven't played yet?

Newsflash ... if you got a lot of rookies playing, it's more of a statement on how bad your team is than how good your rookies are. The Patriots don't have any day 2 pick rookie contributors. Antonio Anderson started for us as a rookie. That doesn't mean he was any good. It just meant our team sucked.
