LOS ANGELES (AP) — Dinosaurs are anything but extinct at the box office.

"Jurassic World," the fourth film in the series, became the highest global opener of all time with a staggering $511.8 million in its first days in theaters. It also devoured a number of domestic box office records with a $204.6 million take, the Rentrak media-measurement company estimated on Sunday.

In addition to setting a record for 2015, "Jurassic World" is now the second-highest domestic opening of all time, right behind "Marvel's The Avengers" which took in $207.4 million in 2012. By the time Monday actuals roll in, there is a chance the film could dethrone "Avengers."

It has been 14 years since there has been a new "Jurassic" film in theaters, and the combination of cinematic grandeur, nostalgia and awareness helped "Jurassic World" far surpass analyst predictions going into the weekend, which had the film on track for a $125 million opening.

"This over-performed in a way that I've never seen," Rentrak's Senior Media Analyst Paul Dergarabedian said. "It broke the box office sound barrier."

Universal Pictures and Legendary co-financed the $150 million, PG-13 rated film. Audiences in every quadrant turned out to see the film in theaters. According to exit polls, 39 percent were under the age of 25, signifying the massive interest of both a new generation and the continued enthusiasm of those who saw "Jurassic Park" in 1993

Saw it in Imax and thought it was very good. Not surprised by the total $ since it was $15 a ticket for Imax. Spent $150 taking my family to see a movie. $90 just on tickets!

I guess it will hold that record for a few months, until Star Wars debuts.

I can count on one hand the number of times ive been to the movies in last five years. But 3 this year, Bond, MI:5, and of course Star wars

I think Ant-Man will do well. Not in JWorld, Avengers, or Star Wars territory but being such an original hero movie, and the reaction from the trailers, it will be a hit.

I'm kind of surprised it did this well. When I first heard the news I thought it had the potential to bomb.

Once I saw the cast and trailers, I thought it would do 120mil range (domestic).

But this? Insane.

Saw it. Thought it was good.

Star Wars won't hit that mark. Not even close.

Jurassic world is something everyone in a way wants to see. I like star wars but I doubt it tops jurassic world, it might be there with Avengers age of ultron.

Well Star Wars is universal. World wide fandom. And with Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill on board, no doubt people will be flocking to see it.

I guess these are the types of movies that the masses enjoy. The original was unique because the special effects were ahead of its time. This one is a top seller because 1) it's a remake, 2) it's action packed, 3) it doesn't make you think, 4) and it's family fun. And Star Wars will outsell it. Because it's another unoriginal mindless movie.

What movies of today use the mind per say (with originality)? Can't remember many intellectual dramas lately. Well those I've seen advertised here and there.

I think it will at least be close. How are defining close? Within 25%? 10%?

Hey... I am a Star Wars geek....more than star trek. So I would be happy if it did. As long as it was good.

I just think this was an anomaly for movies.

Agree with world wide audience.

Star Wars is still scifi. Doesn't appeal to all. Jurassic would appeal to more.
