Aikman v. Marino
I think the argument could go either way.
Rypien v. Marino
This is not even a contest. Rypien had one good year as well as his team playing very well. He was nothing past that year. Marino could do the same things Rypien did that one year pretty much every season he played.
"Stat mean nothing" is such an over generalized statement. Marino has stats because he had to throw the ball so much to help his team win. If he doesn't throw the ball his team doesn't score. He gave them their best chance to win by throwing it a lot and throwing it well.
Aikman gave his team the best chance to win by being efficient the few times he threw the ball in the regular season. He passed the ball more times in the playoffs because that is also what Dallas needed to do to win. Aikman was even more efficient in the playoffs during the 4 years that Dallas won 3 Superbowls. So Aikman does have the stats. You just have to look in the right places. Empty stats mean nothing.
