What was the score of that game at halftime? 21-14. What was the score after 3 quarters? 21-17. The 3 biggest plays in that game had nothing to do with the Stealers being better than us, they were 1) atrocious PI call, giving the Stealers a 1st down when they would have had to punt, and then eventually a TD 2) Landry having a guy with a broken hand out on the kick team, which led to a fumble and a Stealer TD and 3) a HOF TE inexplicably dropping an easy gimmee TD with nobody near him in the endzone. Now what plays did the Stealers make there?
We all have our opinions, mine is the 78 Cowboys were a better team than the Stealers that yr. If we had played them 10 times, we'd have won 6 or 7 of them.
The best teams dont always win the Super Bowl, and 1978 was an example of that.
I think that the 78 Cowboys squad was the best overall team they ever put on the field, with all due respect to the 1992,1977,1971 and 1993 squads. The talent on that 78 team was awesome, just look at the reserves they had-Danny White,Preston Pearson,Butch Johnson,Larry Cole,Mike Hegman,Randy Hughes,Dennis Thurman,Jim Cooper,Jay Saldi-all would have been starters on any other team back then.Staubach had a great year in 78 with the new passing rules implemented, evidenced by the big years from Tony Hill,Drew Pearson,Billy Joe DuPree and Preston Pearson. The running game with Tony Dorsett,Robert Newhouse and Scott Laidlaw was very productive, and once the team stopped turning the ball over about halfway through the season, they were basically unstoppable.
The defense on that 78 team was one of the best in Cowboys history, giving up only 13 points a game, with a fierce pass rush from Randy White,Harvey Martin and Ed Jones, very tough to run against, and having great leadership from Charlie Waters and Cliff Harris in the secondary.
I respect the Steeler team that the Cowboys lost to in SB XIII,but they got every break you could imagine in the 3rd quarter of that game, and could not stop the Cowboys late in that game when Roger made that great comeback against the fine Pittsburgh defense. The Steelers were hanging on by a thread in the latter part of the 4th quarter, and I always wondered what would have happened had Dallas recovered the last onside kick there with about 20 seconds to go and 50 yards to go.Would have been a dramatic ending for sure.
SB XIII to me is the toughest loss in Dallas history, narrowly beating out the 94 and 81 losses to SF,and the Ice Bowl loss to GB
