Steelers' 2 point Conversion Strategy

Tampa 2 variants are know for being tough near the goalline. Not sound gameplaning IMO

Instead of questioning going for 2, the steelers should be questioning their play calls. If I recall correctly, they had a lot of empty back sets in their 2 point plays.

Steelers were good last year at converting 2. Not sure about this year. Dallas D just stepped up and slapped them to an 0fer.

They've probably done research that shows, in the aggregate, it either evens out or gives you a slight advantage.

Yup. It might have hurt them in this game...but it's paid off for them overall.

Uh, no. The NFL is ridiculously conservative. There are extremely strong arguments for (1) going for it on 4th down WAY more often and (2) going for 2 more often. Coaches won't do it because the criticism they get when it doesn't work massively outweighs the praise they get when it does work. They do it to save their jobs, even though it costs them wins.

This.

I read somewhere that it is statistically beneficial to go for it on 4th down regardless of field position. I know NFL coaches will never do it but there is a successful high school team, I think somewhere in North Texas, that always goes for it on 4th down and 2 point conversions regardless of the situation..

I played 6 man football in highschool and you get 2 points for kicking it and only one for running it in. It's hard for 4 lineman to block 6. Not that it has anything to do with this thread just FYI..

the thing is a team has to have good plays designed to have success in the 2 point situation.
Dallas went for 2 twice with the wrong type play, a low % play.
Pitt missed on 4 ? so they were not using right plays either.

If your not good at it, then better to kick the point.

In the scale of football stupidity, how bad was the Steelers' 2 point conversion strategy today?

I think it was extremely stupid to go for the 2 points but I cheered each time they tried and failed. Had Garrett done that fans here would have been livid.

Not really that bad except for the first attempt.
One would guess they went for two to shock us and stun us if we fell back 8-0 or they'd seen something they felt they could exploit.
After the first attempt, they were chasing the rabbit. They went for it the second time to make up for the first time. The final two times it was the correct thing to do to get the lead up to 3, just as it was correct for us to go for it our two times as we were trying to move the lead up to 7.

What's pathetic is that these two offenses went 0-6 in an era when the 2 point conversion is not far below a 50% proposition.

What I hate about our attempts is that we do nothing creative other than to get Dez in a 1-1 situation, but then we know it and they know it, and we always go for the fade. One fade step and a quick slant inside, and I believe Dez is all alone. Even when you're Dez, you can't just keep running the fade when the other team is playing that and expect to win every time.

When I saw us the first time with 4 receivers stacked on the right, I was intrigued until I saw Dez alone at the bottom...here comes the stupid fade, I said. The defender knew it too...run the freakin slant with that big body when you're all alone.

I equate what happened yesterday with Tomlin going for and missing the 2 point conversation as a poker player that got a bad beat and then went on tilt. trying to muscle the thing to work and loses time and again.

Good for you, Tomlin.

The problem with playing the stats game is that you have to commit to it completely....you can't go 1/2 way...like playing Blackjack by the book gives you an advantage but you have to play it all the time and not uses hunches

Going for some 2 pts conversions but not others based on the score or situation nullifies any statistical advantage and it will backfire like it did Sunday

Never punting works in High School were runners average 6 ypc and punters only punt 35 yds....in the pros the defenses are better and so are the punters and gunners.......I would never punt inside the other teams 40 but that is a firm a rule I can live with
