Stephen can't admit he regrets being inactive last offseason

we've got a cracker jack analytics department that produces actionable intelligence which obviously was not acted upon last off-season

for some reason

it will be interesting to see if there are any moves this off-season. I expect a bit more. Some expect lots more, not me yet.

Cowboys EVP Stephen Jones when asked about the Philadelphia Eagles winning the Super Bowl and how much that drives and influences Dallas:

“Obviously much respect to them for getting that done. … Certainly we’re always looking for ways to be better. What we’ve done recently with our lack of playoff success and certainly this year, we understand that and know we have to continue to look for ways to be better than that.”

WORD SALAD ALERT!!!!

True. But they looked bad before the injuries.

They had their shot in 21-23 and blew by not being able to recognize the window they had, and needing and extra quality starter or two.

They wanted to win then and also outsmart everyone else by not mortgaging the future to do it. Only sort of.

Now that’s over and they need at least two solid drafts in a row to get back to that spot, but the QB is also in sharp decline.

Again, they blew it.
Amateurs in over their heads.
29 years and counting.....

Actually, I don't regret not bringing in any free agents last year either, because no amount of free agency would have helped last year's team

better to see what we need with a new regime in fill holes now.

In his mind if they just stayed healthy they would have contended.

And that will be their mindset going into free agency. We don't really need much.
This.

And this is 100% everything that sucks about this FO.

You can’t correct the issue until you admit there is in fact a problem. JJ and SJ still think they are the smartest guys in the room and until they are willing to acknowledge some hard truths, they will just continue to make excuses and pass the buck

I know this meme is overused, but it is about as accurate as it can be when you look at how the Jones' run the Cowboys.

Carr was just an overpay. It wasn't even like anyone thought he was going to be a great player, but they paid him like one because he was the best available that year - and they were desperate at corner. The lesson learned should have been not to pay premium money for an average talent. But instead Stephen decided it meant not to take chances on high priced players ever again.

The worst thing about the 2012 offseason was that they gave Rob Ryan the keys to Free agency and the draft.
Signed Carr and traded up for Claiborne, one of the top man coverage corner in the draft. Got two guys that could play man, and at times on an island with all of Ryan's blitzes.

They fire Ryan after the 2012 season and then bring in Kiffin, the guy who ran the Tampa 2 zone coverage.
Carr and Claiborne were man coverage guys.
Dallas didn't only run zone in 2013/14 but the only corner that didn't struggle with the scheme change was Scandrick.

Felt like if they invested all that money and assets into man coverage corners then the next DC should of been a guy who at least could use those corners to their strengths. IIRC Kiffin's scheme wanted the corners to be more physical at the LOS which C&C both struggled with.

I hope the same thing hasn't just happened with Eberflus: Hire a DC the Joneses like and are comfortable with, not the one who fits the personnel best.

Exactly lol, the best thing he could do is just shut up.
That would be the second-best thing. It is farfetched (understatement) but the best realistically conceivable thing would be for him to keep the co-owner title. And then divorce himself totally of the Chief Operating Officer title and its responsibilities. Some will automatically say 'sell the team' but that is almost pure fantasy.

It's hard to believe there isn't someone in the room who goes "Guys, we think this every year and it never works out. Let's do something different."

But maybe they're not allowed to speak.
