Normally when a WR is running a route to the outside and the DB is playing outside technique, it's on the wide receiver to signal to the quarterback to change the route. That's why you always see WR pointing towards the defender that's covering him. He's telling the QB to take another look at this guy.
You don't throw an out route when the DB is playing outside technique. Gallup didn't point it out and Dak didn't see it. It's both their faults.

Learn football.

The previous week, Gallup made several tough catches with DBs hanging on him, so they likely didn't fear making that throw against single coverage.

That has to be totally on Gallup . As a receiver you have to stay upright in order to catch the ball and in a storied career in NE now Indy Gilmore probably has not had an easier interception.

You could tell from Daks body language after the play it was three letters the first one is W I’ll leave the guessing as to the other 2.

When Cooper was here it was almost like you had to force the ball early into his hands keep him involved , interested . With 88 13 and Noah Brown it’s whoever is open distribute the passes then you have the three horsemen at TE . I’m liking this late season passing game .

Anyone saying this is on Dak or even Gallup....what are you watching?

First there could have been a hands to the face but then at the top of the route, Gillmore literally blocks Gallup to the ground then goes and picks the ball.

Should have been defensive Hold or Interference . There is no other call there.

He might’ve gotten away with a little bit but not enough for a flag...overall Gilmore made an excellent play

I thought the Gilmore pick play was more of PI than the one that actually got called later on and gave us a big first down

Not even close to Illegal contact. Here are the rules:

ARTICLE 3. ILLEGAL CONTACT BEYOND FIVE-YARD ZONE. Beyond the five-yard zone, if the player who receives the snap
remains in the pocket with the ball, a defender cannot initiate contact with a receiver who is attempting to evade him.
A defender
may use his hands or arms only to defend or protect himself against impending contact caused by a receiver.

When Gallup turns his route right into Gilmore, he has the right to protect himself against impending contact per the wording of the rule. He didn't push Gallup down. Gallup went down from what looked like not being prepared for Gilmore to hold his ground like Collinsworth said. Not illegal contact or PI in any way. Gilmore has as much right to the thrown ball as Gallup and can position himself as such, especially if you're going to try to run a route right through him. Gallup could have crossed in front of him easily to use his body to shield Gilmore and just didn't.
I appreciate you posting the rule but your interpretation if the play is wrong

Gallup literally tries to cross in front of him but Gillmore reaches and grabs him then butts into him knocking him down

- Some routes Gallup (and other WRs) can run well ... and some routes he cannot.

- And it was not just the Gilmore INT v Colts ... but he also busted a route that resulted in a INT vs Giants also.
He had that WTH,... did you meant that throw for me. .. he seemed clueless

- Imo, the less Gallup does not have to ..stop and re-start his feet again, .. the better.
He is at his best when he can gather, build up momentum, and running full blast to a certain spot.

- That fade pass for a TD in corner end zone vs Colts is one of his biggest strong suits.
Oddly that was the type jump catch that ended up in an ACL tear in last year's playoff Niners game.

- It took more than half a season, but Gallup is gradually showing some signs of getting back to playing mode.
He's not all the way there yet- and i haven't seen separation and vertical threat yet.

Initiate contact? You yourself said that Gilmore didn't extend his arms. That means Gallup was already up on him when he did contact him. Again, Gallup turned his route right into Gilmore. The two of them were separate before Gallup turned into him, were they not? That's called defending against impending contact per the rules. Would Gallup have knocked into Gilmore if Gilmore didn't put up hands? Yes. Should Gilmore have taken a charge or is he allowed to jockey for position on a thrown ball?

Produce the video of the other occurrence.

A receiver isn't trying to "evade" a defender when he turns a route right into the guy's body. Lol. And again, the rules state if there's impending contact, the defender can use hands or arms. As you yourself noted, he didn't extend them and has as much right to the ball as Gallup. Gallup should have turned in sooner but he tried to head fake Gilmore and Gilmore didn't bite. The result was Gallup ran farther and then turned which drove him right into Gilmore. With the ball in the air, Gilmore doesn't have to move after being run into. He can establish his own position to make a play and did so. Gallup just couldn't outmuscle him.

Stop the video at the 29-second mark and look at it. Gallup is attempting to cut in front of Gilmore and Gilmore sticks his left hand in Gallup's chest to stop him (so he did actually extend his arm). Gallup is clearly trying to cut in front of Gilmore at that point and you can tell by the positioning of their bodies as Gallup's is positioned in front of Gilmore's, but Gilmore stops him from being able to get in front of him with the contact, then thrusts his upper body into Gallup, while Gallup is still trying to evade him. Having made illegal contact with Gallup on his attempt to evade him, Gilmore then does what you are pointing out, he stands his ground. Gallup only ran into Gilmore after the illegal contact kept him from evading him. Gallup did not turn his route right into Gilmore. He turned his route right in front of Gilmore, but Gilmore stopped him with the hand to the chest and then the full-on upper body check.

I watched the video and then went and grabbed the rules and the play mirrors the rule. Gilmore didn't "grab" Gallup in any way. Neither was there anything close to hands to the face like you claim in the initial 5 yard chuck. What you're leaving out is that Gallup tries to head fake Gilmore, it doesn't work, then runs further and then turns into Gilmore. Had he just crossed instead of head faked, he's in good position to body screen Gilmore to get over to the ball. But per the rules, which a none of you are quoting in your defense, Gilmore can use his hands or arms "to protect himself against impending contact caused by a receiver." As I just stated, Gallup caused the contact by choosing to run farther and then turn into Gilmore. If you watch the video, they are both moving to the right when the contact happens so Gilmore didn't "butt him" going the opposite way. Gallup ran into him with them both moving right. With the ball thrown, Gilmore doesn't have to move and can chart a path to the ball. Gallup put himself in poor position by trying a head fake when he should have cut. Gilmore doesn't have to get bowled over because the rules cover him being able to defend. So he did.

Yes. If you look at it frame-by-frame, it's pretty clear. Gallup turns toward Gilmore and tries to cut in front of him, but Gilmore sticks his left hand into his chest to cut off that movement, then rams him to further cut it off and knock him to the ground. The first blow is clearly illegal contact.

No. Gallup tries to cross in front of Gilmore and when he does, Gilmore sticks his hand into his chest to stop him from doing that. This sets Gilmore up for the body blow he delivers to Gallup that knocks him to the ground. As per the rule, the receiver is trying to evade the defender and the defender initiates contact to prevent him from doing it. It's illegal contact. As I said, if you stop the video at the 29-second mark, you can clearly see the contact initiated by Gilmore before any contact would have been allowed by rule.

You yourself said he didn't extend but now you're saying he extended and trying to call that the illegal contact after previously calling the non-extended hands during the bump the illegal contact? You're struggling, bro. Lol. But he did extend to put a hand on him AFTER Gallup turned toward him to run into him. Impending contact. And stop with the "evade" because it's a word in the rules. You don't evade someone you chose to run into and besides, the rules state that it's when the defender initiates contact as the receiver tries to evade. That did not happen here because Gallup initiated the contact, did he not? So "evade" does not apply.

So at this point, Gilmore can use his hands or arms "to defend or protect himself against impending contact caused by a receiver." You and Ken cannot get around this. You run into a guy, he can use his hands and arms. And it wasn't a turn in front of Gilmore because you see Gallup try to use a swim move TO get in front of him because he was running INTO him. They were even. Again, cut earlier if you want to get in front of him and not try the head fake. You can't be mad that Gilmore did a good job and Gallup had poor positioning. He chose that poor positioning by trying to head fake instead of just cutting sooner. Sorry, but you cannot get around the wording of the rules nor that Gallup initiated contact which fully allowed Gilmore to do what he did. Just good ball.

Interestingly enough, I was in the game thread on Reddit when it happened, and the consensus among most people (fans of all 32 teams) was that the pick was primarily Gallup’s fault.

Sorry bro. No amount of 'splainin' is going to change the plain video that Gallup, after being 2 yards apart from Gilmore, then turns into him later by choice to run into and then try to swim move for positioning. When the receiver initiates the contact like Gallup did, Gilmore can put his hands or arms up due to impending contact and did. You can't run into someone then claim to evade them like you were just crossing in front unmolested. You didn't even count the gentle hand Gilmore put up at first and then switched to that becoming the illegal contact once you saw the wording of the rules. You can't shoehorn after the fact and it doesn't apply regardless because Gallup was running into Gilmore whether Gilmore had his hands in the sky or braced himself like he did.

It was. Gilmore had won the positioning and Gallup wasn't savvy or physical enough to take it back. He tried some dinky head fake instead of aggressively cutting and played right into Gilmore's positioning.
