Stephen Jones: Cowboys don't see Pickens as a 2 WR

Here's hoping he has an ALL-PRO year.........our options
* Try to sign him to a long-term deal
* franchise tag
* Let him walk.....comp pick

Either way, the better he plays, the better chances of us having more Ws. That's a good thing
If he has an All Pro year it will cost A LOT to sign him. If we were to lose him in free agency we’ll get a 5th. If he does have a big year we’ll probably franchise him if we can’t come to an agreement on a new contract.

Im just saying it doesn’t HELP negotiations, so why say anything at all?

Could it be about trying to convince everyone you know what you’re doing despite the overwhelming evidence to the contrary?
Could also be a message to Pickens letting him know he’s valued and the team is committed to his success, which is 90% of his issue with the Steelers org who didn’t do anything to help the passing game while he was there.

This is a sales pitch to fans. No way in hell do you take targets away from CeeDee and give them to Pickens.

Lamb can simultaneously handle monster target volume and be top-notch efficient with that volume. He's just a stud. Ferguson will also get the customary Dak TE 60 catches, so Pickens' target share is basically what we threw at Tolbert or Cooks last season.

Pickens isn't really a high-volume guy anyway, so I think he can make do with a limited number of targets. In his 3 years with the Steelers, he caught 52, 63, and 59 passes. But he's got a bonkers 16.3 career YPC.
Been saying this for months. CD > TE > everyone else.

Pickens is big for Dak, but having a strong run game would be even bigger.
The biggest downside to this season is that a decent year will have some saying that Dak was somehow a pivotal part of it rather than just along for the ride.

Man you guys nick pick everything looking for the negative side of every single thing the Cowboys do.
not surprised at all that you do not get it. Unless the Cowboys have already decided they only want Pickens for this year, they just gave him some very good negotiation leverage

this is a very fair take. I still think it wasn't wise, but your point is solid.

Whine on. It’s what you do best.

Thank-you Stephen, I know how important it is to stress this point in Pickens contract year.

My goodness.......Stephen loves himself some Pickens. Tap the brakes on thinking he may only be a 1-year rental..

It's not a shot at Dak. At least thats not my intention. It's not a coincidence Romo was at his best in 2014 with our oline and Demarco bruising defenses.

We need the best version of Dak and I dont think that's flinging the ball 30+ times a game.

I don't make you click links.

Cowboys EVP Stephen Jones on @MadDogRadio talking about trading for WR George Pickens:

“We think of him as more than a (No. 2 wide receiver). … Here you get a guy who has experience, who has had great success in the NFL, obviously a tremendous competitor. He reminds a lot (of us) in our building of Dez Bryant, in terms of his competitiveness and what he brings to the field, his edge.

“We had some opportunities around the league that we were looking at, and this one, at the end of the day, made the most sense. Whether it was Coach Schottenheimer and his offensive staff looking at him or Will McClay and the personnel group, and obviously Jerry and myself, felt like this was the best action for us and certainly one that made a lot of sense to us.”

Cowboys EVP Stephen Jones on @MadDogRadio when asked about concerns in trading for WR George Pickens:

“He’s an uber competitor, and we had one in Dez Bryant who was the same way. I mean, he just couldn't get enough. And boy, when the lights came on and his cleats hit the turf, he was a different guy. And it feels like George is going to be that way. He certainly sometimes plays with high emotion and that can, as we all know, when you're playing sports and you're competing and you're playing with a lot of emotion, sometimes you can make a wrong decision here and there."

“But, we had that with Dez, but certainly he knows he wants to continue to get his hands around that, just like Dez worked at it all the time. And we feel like that it's certainly worth what comes with that in terms of what he's doing to continue to get better when he's out there competing week in and week out."

"And I know, all the homework we did, he's well loved by his teammates. They want him on their team. And we felt the same way about Dez. And we just feel like he's gonna bring something here to our organization that we need in terms of an edge and bringing that energy of competition to the field, day in, day out, week in, week out.”

Oh, I agree. Just saying that the diehards that want Dak to be better than he is will be acting like any improvement is all him.

I don’t understand the vitriol around saying Pickens is a number one receiver (which he’s always been anyway). That is in no way comparable to saying a market-setting contract is the floor for negotiations.
