Stephen Jones: Cowboys don't see Pickens as a 2 WR

If Stephen really feels this way, extend Pickens right now. If he gets 1,000+ yards and 10 TDs, Pickens price goes up. If he helps the Cowboys make a deep playoff run, his price goes up.

When the Eagles traded for AJ Brown, they extended him shortly thereafter. Didn't have him worried about the stability of his next contract. Now look at him and the Eagles.

Hate the Eagles, but Howie > the Joneses.

Stephen should have kept his mouth shut because if Pickens has a big year he’ll be looking for WR1 money.
Makes absolutely no difference what Jones says; Pickens' stats will speak for themselves. If Pickens doesn't have a stellar year, his agent isn't going to say, "But you said you didn't view him as a WR2'.

The Cowboys deal-making prowess is unique. In this case, they have a player on the last year of his contract and they are talking up his value to ensure they cannot sign him in 2026.

maybe that is the plan; talk him up and then say to the fans that they cannot afford to resign him

Him and CeeDee will play off each other

Some games CeeDee will get 45 yards while Pickens gets 120

Some games Pickens will get 30 and CeeDee will get 100

Some games both will get 50 and Ferguson, or Turpin will get 150

That’s how it is and yes the board will complain

Is Stephen Jones afraid of setting Pickens off by calling him the WR2? It's very simple math; Lamb is WR1, and Pickens is WR2. We don't need players that are so delicate that they can't handle that basic concept.

Well, he was All-Pro just two years ago, so it’s not a crazy reach.
Yep..2nd Team All Pro 2023.

People forget because of the disastrous, worst home playoff loss in Cowboy history, but he did have great regular season.

Stephen’s reply will be that was before he didn’t have a stellar year. His numbers don’t equate to WR1 money.

Or trying his best to make sure he'll get that 3rd rd compensatory pick when another team overpays or gives him normal wr money

This is a sales pitch to fans. No way in hell do you take targets away from CeeDee and give them to Pickens.

Lamb can simultaneously handle monster target volume and be top-notch efficient with that volume. He's just a stud. Ferguson will also get the customary Dak TE 60 catches, so Pickens' target share is basically what we threw at Tolbert or Cooks last season.

Pickens isn't really a high-volume guy anyway, so I think he can make do with a limited number of targets. In his 3 years with the Steelers, he caught 52, 63, and 59 passes. But he's got a bonkers 16.3 career YPC.
The lower volume can also be possibly attributed to the fact that the QB’s and offense in Pittsburgh has really sucked since Roethlisberger retired.

Stephen recently went public with the idea that he considers Pickens as a 1B, whatever that might mean to a fan, another executive or potentially, a player's negotiating representative. Whatever the effect might be on that individual is likely to affect Pickens' standing as a player.

Oh, I agree. Just saying that the diehards that want Dak to be better than he is will be acting like any improvement is all him.

Fair point. He absolutely NEEDS the supporting cast. I don't necessarily believe hes been the problem. He's not the solution either. Dak needs to be a bus driver. He can drive the hell out of the right bus though.

It’s likely just an attempt to encourage him and make him feel good about the opportunity.

It’s not some master plan one way or the other.
