Doug Free - T - Cowboys
Cowboys VP Stephen Jones was noncommittal Monday when asked about RT Doug Free's future, or lack thereof, in Dallas.
"No decision has been made," Jones said of Free's roster spot. "It’s not guaranteed. There are a lot of moving parts." The fact that Dallas has yet to adjust Free's $7 million base salary suggests he's in grave danger of being cut

I doubt the Cowboys will make any move with Free until the April Draft is over. It would make no sense to cut him now until you are sure about filling the void.

Yeah, I agree with that.

exactly. no financial reason to cut him now and no reason to leave yourself forced to draft a ot. i suspect we will either draft a guy or sign a free agent later. there are still a lot of tackles on the market and the prices are much less than he is

I highly doubt Free sees even one OTA or mini-camp or Cowboy practice. Basically, it comes down to who is still available at OT in FA after the draft and who the Cowboys draft.

The only way Free can guarantee himself a spot on the team is with a large paycut of about $4-5M/year. Even with the paycut, it is still more money than he could make with some other team.

Dropping Sensabaugh, Connor, Spears, and this bum is the best part of this offseason.

What void? He's a terrible, awful player. There are probably 100 guys out there who can come in and do the same thing he does.

Can't keep him around for that much. Would like to keep him around for depth at a reduced salary. But that ain't gonna happen.

I think there remains some hope that he will return to form.

That said, I expect that we are not doing anything until leverage is the highest. If we can get him to shave his base down to 2 mill and we see an improved player on the field in TC/pre-season, it would be in our best interest to keep him - even as a backup

I have seen worse, I would not doubt the Cowboys will release him as part of the june 1st cuts but I expect the Cowboys to have a player in place before that happens.

I agree with Stephen that once he was splitting time his play improved however with the big contract he has I doubt the Cowboys keep unless as you say he takes a big cut in pay. I just think it is more likely he will be released sometime after April. Just a hunch.

Not replacing someone unless you actually have a replacement. It is a decent strategy

No doubt about it. I'm as disappointed in Free as anyone. He had shown very positive signs of being a quality player for us then just fell off big time. If the contract was smaller I would be more willing to continue working with him but unless he takes a cut in pay I just do not see the Cowboys keeping him. However before you cut him you better gets someone to take over before hand.

No kidding.

It's not like was serviceable where the team can go with him if they must.

He's awful and needs to be replaced.

Indicates, to me, that they are looking at getting a tackle in the draft. These are probably the scenarios:

Get a tackle later in the draft that is good enough to be a backup, then start Parnell and release Free. Get a starter early, then release Free and Parnell is backup.

Get no one, and keep Free to backup Parnell at a reduced cost. (I would still just release him because he's awful--but that's probably what they're thinking).

All you have to do is get run over and then rush over and help Tony up:)

I believe, that the void already exists.

As much as some of you beat up Fluker, he would be a DEFINITIVE upgrade from Free. While Fluker definitely needs to refine his footwork, he ALREADY is a mauler in the run game, posseing what seems to be strength that Free does NOT have. To play T in the NFL, the prototype has both good to excellent playing strength and good to excellent footwork. Free is now bad at both.

It makes no sense to keep him. He has to go because of his level of play and salary. It's not a "wait and see if we get someone else" situation. They have to get someone else.

Cut him now.
