Stephen jones on Doug free status

It makes no sense to keep him. He has to go because of his level of play and salary. It's not a "wait and see if we get someone else" situation. They have to get someone else.

Cut him now.

Cutting him now does nothing for the Cowboys. Making sure they have a player in place which they likely will get in the draft then allows the Cowboys to release or request Free to take a cut in pay. No need to run out there and do it now it does nothing to help the situation. It may make some fans happy but but outside of that it does nothing.

Guys, he will never see an OTA unless he takes a major pay cut first.

Why?

Because if he gets hurt during an OTA then the team is responsible for his entire salary.

Can't keep him around for that much. Would like to keep him around for depth at a reduced salary. But that ain't gonna happen.

I disagree. We can pick an UDFA that can turnstile like Free. At least the new kid may have potential to improve. Free has done nothing but regress. We've seen the best of Doug Free and it's a long way back in the rear view mirror.

Time to move on whether a replacement is on the roster yet or not.

Andre freaking Smith! Get that tub of lard's tuchas down to Dallas pronto!

I agree with Stephen that once he was splitting time his play improved however with the big contract he has I doubt the Cowboys keep unless as you say he takes a big cut in pay. I just think it is more likely he will be released sometime after April. Just a hunch.

I'll agree here.

They will get someone to replace in Draft before any cuts happen.

Also going through any mini camp to see if there is any hope.

I love how Jerry thinks Free has more value cause he has played LT. Sucking at two positions isn't any better than sucking at one Jerry. :bang2:

Free knows the paycut ultimatum is coming. Just a matter of when and how much. I think his agent has already told him what he can expect from any other team if cut and it is not good. Incentive-laden vet min with little signing bonus from any other team. With the Cowboys, he may get a little more, I'm thinking $2M vs. the vet min.

Doug Free - T - Cowboys
Cowboys VP Stephen Jones was noncommittal Monday when asked about RT Doug Free's future, or lack thereof, in Dallas.
"No decision has been made," Jones said of Free's roster spot. "It’s not guaranteed. There are a lot of moving parts." The fact that Dallas has yet to adjust Free's $7 million base salary suggests he's in grave danger of being cut

It's a done deal that Free will be gone.

Jerra has free on one hand and $7 million on the other hand. Which will he choose.

Dang, even Jerra undeerstands this kinda math.

Several things to consider before getting rid of Free:

What if Tyron Smith gets hurt? Who comes in?

What if Parnell gets hurt? Who comes in?

What if Parnell stinks up the joint?

What if Free is actually a better LT (as opposed to the right side) and Smith better at RT than LT? Not saying that Free is better than Smith at RT. In other words, is the combination of Free at LT and Smith at RT significantly/marginally better than Free at RT and Smith at LT?

Again, I'm not saying or inferring that Free is better than Smith at LT. Nor do I believe that Free is a better LT than Smith.

Can Free be cut after June 1 and not have his cap number split between 2 years? Maybe they are waiting for one of the deals to be reworked, Romo and Spencer, then cut free and accelerate his entire cap charge to this year, to save room on next years cap?
