We used a first rounder on him to play LG for a couple of seasons to then hopefully replace Tyron at LT down the road.

They didn't use a first rounder on him to play LT as a rookie at all this year.
Correct because they had hoped Tyron would be there. Problem is we didn’t really make any other contingency plans in the event Tyron went down again.

And since Tyler was the long term plan for his replacement it doesn’t appear outside the realm of possibilities the need to insert him sooner with few other options available due to their poor plans otherwise.

The bigger discussion is who are you going to put out there if it’s not Tyler?

Tyler Smith at LT is a no duh for me, but why didn't they get him some snaps at LT this training camp and preseason?

Terrence Steele at LT would be the second obvious option.
Pretty sure they are rolling with Ball and leaving the rook where he is at LG but we shall see.
This OL lineup will be fluid throughout the season though, changes will be made, that is a for sure fact.

Agreed -- it's altogether too true that Stephen and Jerry haven't done their duties in serving the needs of the OL. They're heading into the regular season with a festering problem. The final cuts might be their last chance to find an OT to fill the vacancy on the left side. It's not a pretty picture. It's obvious that Josh Ball isn't the answer at LT. Tyler Smith most likely isn't ready to fill that role, either. Stephen should know better than to say he can handle it so soon.

We have the money to go get the best LT available. Go get him on a one year deal . That way you dont have to change 2-3 positions and keep the Tyler Smith plan intact. That gives both of our other LT prospects another year to develop. All of our Lts have zero game experience.

Our woes at LT are doubled by the fact that our FO is determined to protect their 20 million under-the-cap dollars to re-sign Parsons and Diggs in 2023. It'll be interesting to see what they decide to do as a preventative measure to protect that money. It might get pretty dicey to resolve that festering mess.

I for one will wait until gameplay to decide my thoughts on Jerry's optimistic view. I know, I know. Crazy, right?

Stephen can say what he wants, but it seems to me that the main reason he's adamant upon starting Tyler Smith at LT is because he's really concerned with saving the team's 20 million cap dollars to sign Parsons and Diggs to big contracts in 2023. To be totally honest, I can't really say as I blame him too much for that, since they'll both be such crucial signings for that season. If truth be told, I'd say he's simply quite reluctant to admit as much.
Parsons? Why would they re sign him next year? Diggs maybe but parsons? Makes 0 sense

That seems to be the consensus of opinion, from what I've read lately.

Maybe it was Lamb, rather than Parsons that'll be due his contract.

I know for sure that there were two of them to sign a contract, though.

I think it’s lamb. Parsons was just drafted last year and also has a 5th year option. Same with lamb. I think diggs gets done next year though

He should be the plan. You drafted a LT, you have a huge need at LT. Tyler playing guard was a luxury but everyone knew he would eventually take the tackle job. You can hire a bandaid for this year or you start getting this kid experience now. Not 100%ideal but things happen.

The truth is that the Cowboys DID foresee the need for a new Left Tackle, and they DID address it by drafting Tyler Smith. Of course, the preferred plan was to have a healthy Tyron Smith this year, and have Tyler Smith work himself first into the rotation at Left Guard.

But based on Tyron Smith missing 10 games over the past two years, the Cowboys obviously realized that someone on the roster would need to fill in when Tyron was anticipated to be out with injury. Steele filled in last year, and he could certainly do it again this year.
The Cowboys also drafted Josh Ball last year, and spent another 5th round draft pick this year for a potential Left Tackle.

So, whining that the Cowboys had no plan is simply stupid, because the Cowboys were very, very obviously trying to find a solution with Steele and three OT draft picks in the last 16 months. You CAN complain that you think that their plan will fail. But you cannot be honest and at the same time say they made no provisions to replace Tyron Smith.

Players get old, and have to be replaced. Replacing a player of Tyron’s ability was never likely to be an even exchange. But Tyler Smith or Josh Ball or Terrence Steele or Matt Waleiski doesn’t have to be as dominant as Tyron in order to become competent at Left Tackle.

The Cowboys will likely be better in the long run by throwing one of the young guys into the fire, and letting him grow into the position. It will also likely be painful in the short term, and give everyone plenty of ammunition to blast the front office. Ideally, Tyron would never get injured or old. Unfortunately, we don’t live in an ideal world

This helps your depth how, Mr. Jones? He's so damn stupid. Trust fund baby trying to run the football business like they run the other businesses.

I don't think people are whining that we have no plan, but the goal is to win now not later. We have the cap to go sign someone and we refuse to address our depth issues. That is why people are upset and angry.

agreed, it will be Diggs, Lamb, Micah in that order , but none of them would be cheap.
Can we retain all of them ? remains to be seen
