The truth is that the Cowboys DID foresee the need for a new Left Tackle, and they DID address it by drafting Tyler Smith. Of course, the preferred plan was to have a healthy Tyron Smith this year, and have Tyler Smith work himself first into the rotation at Left Guard.
But based on Tyron Smith missing 10 games over the past two years, the Cowboys obviously realized that someone on the roster would need to fill in when Tyron was anticipated to be out with injury. Steele filled in last year, and he could certainly do it again this year.
The Cowboys also drafted Josh Ball last year, and spent another 5th round draft pick this year for a potential Left Tackle.
So, whining that the Cowboys had no plan is simply stupid, because the Cowboys were very, very obviously trying to find a solution with Steele and three OT draft picks in the last 16 months. You CAN complain that you think that their plan will fail. But you cannot be honest and at the same time say they made no provisions to replace Tyron Smith.
Players get old, and have to be replaced. Replacing a player of Tyron’s ability was never likely to be an even exchange. But Tyler Smith or Josh Ball or Terrence Steele or Matt Waleiski doesn’t have to be as dominant as Tyron in order to become competent at Left Tackle.
The Cowboys will likely be better in the long run by throwing one of the young guys into the fire, and letting him grow into the position. It will also likely be painful in the short term, and give everyone plenty of ammunition to blast the front office. Ideally, Tyron would never get injured or old. Unfortunately, we don’t live in an ideal world
