Stephen Jones talks upcoming roster decisions

Among the competitions that Jones weighed in on:

• The running backs. DeMarco Murray and Lance Dunbar are locks. Joseph Randle and Ryan Williams are battling for the third spot. Or is it possible that the Cowboys will carry all four of them? “I wouldn’t rule it out,” Jones said.

• Third quarterback. Considering the state of Tony Romo’s back, it might seem logical that the Cowboys carry three quarterbacks again. Brandon Weeden is the backup with Caleb Hanie and Dustin Vaughan being the options for the third quarterback. But Jones said Romo’s health does “not necessarily” force the team to carry three.

• Injured players. The Cowboys are in need of pass rushers and face decisions with Anthony Spencer and DeMarcus Lawrence. Spencer is on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list and would have to be placed on the 53-man roster before the season opener in order to play before Week 7. Lawrence, meanwhile, would have to be on the 53-man or be forced to miss the first eight weeks on short-term injured reserve. “We’ll work through that [by Friday],” Jones said.

• Offensive line. Could the team opt to only go with eight instead of the normal nine or 10? “That’s a reach. You’re getting real thin,” Jones said.

Jones went on to say that the Cowboys will once again be active on the waiver wire to try and improve their roster.
There are a few players who will make the final 53 that shouldn't get too comfortable as there will be immediate upgrades available.

I can see, easily 4 or 5 moves after the roster is supposedly set, including after week 1.

When Stephen is throwing out the # 7.......I'm thinking you might see some trades. That is a lot of moves to be picking guys up off the street. And probably not the best way to be building a playoff contender.:(

What? You don't like finding your edge rusher in August final camp cuts?

What could possibly go wrong with that?

I'm not really worried about that.....It's finding some DTs that will be able to hold the line of scrimmage. Why worry about a pass rush if your giving up 300 yrds rushing every week?

Rod Marinelli

2008: He was fired from his position as head coach one day after coaching the Lions to the worst single-season record in NFL history, 0–16 in 2008.

Coincidence????????

I would think there will be guys on the waiver wire, if not in trades that are better than our #48 to #53 on the roster. Especially at LB. DB depth until Scandrick returns. I still think there is a better back up OT option out there over Parnell or Weems. Has anyone stepped up to take over as the pass rushing DE, I haven't seen it. Do you really want to wait until DLaw return to see.

I know we haven't seen the entire defense healthy or together yet, but as of now, this is what I think. We can churn and get a little better, we need it.

I still have a hard time believing a broken little toe is gonna keep DLaw out more than a couple games. Shoot that pig up and let's roll.:D

I'm hoping he's back for the Saints game. I think he will be back sooner than later too.

Why does the fan base hear these things from a guy who works contracts and not the guy who is the head coach?

Why does Jones and Jones have to speak to the media when the redheaded stranger has time since the friggin player's union ruined training camp for everyone with their silly requirements.

Soon we will see tutus and flag football in August.

An experienced d-lineman (or two) and another LB (or two) might work out well for our defense. A capable backup OT as well.

Because Garrett is extremely closed-mouth regarding his intentions and the Joneses can't resist displaying their "knowledge."

It's not like it's going to make much of a difference. Lawrence is as an 8 sack a year guy at the best, even in his prime.

I hate to see us make a trade.

Just pick up a body that you think can get us through some games until some of these guys are healthy.
