Both players took huge steps back in 2019 after showing some promise together in 2018. Same defense. Same players. Deteriorating results.
As we head into 2021... We have to be looking to move on from both players within 2 years. Wasted resources and sunk costs are setting this team back. For as many “hits” as McClay has had along the OL— we have utterly whiffed on a number of critical defensive picks over the last several years
Yeah, I agree. They started well.
I think LVE's body is just not sturdy enough for the NFL. That's not a jab at him, 99.999% of humans aren't sturdy enough for it.
Jaylon though, I don't even know. When he looks bad, he looks awful, but then he stops 10+ ball carriers by end of game. I'd like to see him do it closer to the LOS but I'd also like a Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle to sniff a probowl selection. Honestly wouldn't be surprised if he washes out of starting lineups, ends up having a solid career as a JAG, or even returns to his projection.
My guess is, they just eat the Jaylon deal and tell LVE to walk next March. You can't create a hole by cutting one of your top 2 LBs right now on this awful defense. Next off-season, you dont want to cut both and be forced to fill LB1 and LB2, so I think you waive LVE's 5th year. Don't forget, his 2022 cap hit will be about the same or higher than Jaylon's. Then you let Jaylon play one more year, the cap goes up, and Jaylon's dead money goes way down. Then we can move on whenever we want, however we want.
In the meantime I could name a few LBs I'd love to snag in the draft and add to this mix but suffice it to say I won't bat an eyelash at many of these LB prospects with a day 1 or 2 pick.
Ending on a x's and o's thing, I really hope we see Quinn try out Jaylon in rotation or coordination with Gregory on some packages, aside from the obvious of trying him at SAM.
