Spotrac posted the contract details for Stephen Paea, another good value signing for Dallas:

Stephen Paea signed a 1 year, $2,000,000 contract with the Dallas Cowboys, including a $500,000 signing bonus, $500,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $2,000,000. In 2017, Paea will earn a base salary of $1,000,000, a signing bonus of $500,000 and a roster bonus of $406,250. Paea has a cap hit of $1,906,250. Per Game Active Bonus: $31,250 ($500,000, 13 LTBE)

Now contrast that to the player he is replacing, Terrell McClain:

Terrell McClain signed a 4 year, $21,000,000 contract with the Washington Commanders, including a $5,000,000 signing bonus, $10,500,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $5,250,000. In 2017, McClain will earn a base salary of $2,250,000, a signing bonus of $5,000,000 and a roster bonus of $234,375. McClain has a cap hit of $3,734,375 while his dead money value is $10,500,000.

My Lord that is way too much money for McLain. This was a good deal for the Cowboys and I doubt they see any dropoff.

I just hope you see some similar quality deals for secondary guys soon.

So it would have cost us nearly $2 million more for McClain this year ($1.9 million to $3.7 million).

The other numbers are not really relevant since we don't know what Paea will cost after this season. Or what replacing him will cost after this season.

Shouldn't be much of an excuse for him. Familiar system, coach that loves him.

this team only has a few holes.
the key players are locked up at least for 3 years other than martin and collins, as well as possibly jones (due in 2 years)
with each year, even if the draft returns 1.5 good players, these holes are being filled.

This isn't about holes, it's about contracts. We tend to look at the overall money a player gets and compare that to what we paid his replacement, but overall money doesn't really matter that much. The early years of contracts and guaranteed money are the main things to look at.

For instance, Barry Church was signed for four years $26 million, but it's really a two-year deal. All of his guaranteed money comes in those two years, in which he will receive $7.8 million and $5 million. After that, the Jags save money if they cut him.

So the question becomes is Church worth a 2-year, $12.8 million deal? That's the base line for comparing him to any replacement.

Since we know that Paea got $1.9 million for one year, then that's really all we can compare to McClain's deal because if Paea plays well, he might get a multiyear deal that's better than what McClain will be receiving for the rest of his contract. If he plays poorly, then the cost to replace him might exceed what McClain received.

McClain's deal is cost-prohibitive for Washington to cut him for two years, but after that, the Commanders save $3.2 million in salary if they do it in 2019 or $5.5 million in salary in 2020. So that much of his 4-year, $21 million deal doesn't really matter.

i was referring to the one year nature of it.
cowboys are buying time with some of these contracts.

He was great in a 4-3 and struggled in a 3-4 from what I've read. Hopefully he can do some damage in the rotation.

Paea was at best a solid player in Chicago - he was never a great player. He's a rotational guy who will fill that role in Dallas.

And the thing is they don't learn.

They been doing the "Hey, let's overpay for free agents" for seemingly the last two decades.

At least the Cowboys have seemingly learned that lesson.

It’s impressive how much they haven’t learned.

This is the Hatcher mistake all over again.

Hatcher was a decent player in a 3-4 who really excelled in his last year with us @ 3T. So the Commanders hand out a pretty large contract for him to return to a position that he wasn’t as good at.

McClain was a serviceable player in a 3-4 who did pretty well in his last year with us @1T. So the Commanders hand out a pretty large contract for him to return to a position that he wasn’t as good at.

But this time, substitute "old player" for "injury prone".

I get what you're saying but just because the Commanders got a better deal that doesn't mean the Paea signing was a mistake. Let it play out before you post threads like this.
Paea's deal is basically a 1 yr deal 2mil

I agree...as long as the Skins and eagles name chase free agents every year trying to build a team I'm not concerned, when they figure out how to draft then I'll get worried.
The giants atleast appear to have a plan in free agency but the other two teams get enamored with name chasing, it makes them feel elite I guess.
