Cowboys EVP Stephen Jones said on @1053thefan that veteran RB Royce Freeman has “really impressed.” They were surprised he was available when they signed him to a one-year deal in April.

“We were just talking about it last night at the scout dinner, ‘What in the hell was he doing sitting around out there?’ An interesting guy to just have been sitting there. He’s a great 2-3 combination in terms of what he can do as a backup. He’s a big, thick guy. And he’s a hell of a special teams player as well. He’ll be a good addition and great complement to (Ezekiel Elliott). And then we’ll let these young guys between (Rico Dowdle and Malik Davis) and those guys battle it out.”

lol I can’t tell whether to take it as an insult to fans’ intelligence or whether to insult the Jones’ intelligence at this point.

Noticed no mention of UDFA Peat or Deuce Vaughn in Stephens monologue. Wouldn’t Freeman go a long way to sending Leupke packing ? In the Miami short and goal fumble debacle I could see Freeman barreling through to a TD . Or a 1st down in other situations .

He was a good inexpensive cap friendly signing .

No. Luepke is the fullback. I've believed since we signed both Freeman and Elliott that the plan was to have them 1-2 at halfback in the inside zone blocking scheme these coaches prefer to run. Running between the tackles actually could lead to more playing time for Luepke as a lead blocker instead of using two tight ends more.

I think the idea is to go power with Elliott and more power with Freeman and let Dowdle/Vaughn pick up the scraps.

The issue is what are we comparing him to? I get quite a few eyeballs on me if I walk the halls of a retirement home. I'm nowhere near as impressive walking the halls at the University of Texas..

2021 - Cut by Panthers after 8 games, caught on with Texans

2022 - Texans cut him from active roster, resigned him to practice squad

2023 - Texans let him walk, signed by Rams, then cut by Rams two months later and signed to practice squad, eventually being recalled to 53.

He's not a guy you think, "wow, how is that guy sitting out there in FA". He's a guy you think, "******* it, we just lost our two best running backs, what warm body is still sitting on his couch desperate for a NFL team to come calling?"

I don't disagree with this. He never developed into the starter that he was hoped to be, but has played pretty well at times in a backup role. Here, I don't think he's expected to be a starter.
