Stephen says Cowboys will finalize franchise tag for George Pickens

Any trade partner will have to sign GP to a new deal and what that deal looks like would affect what the Cowboys get in return. Tell GP’s agent what you need as a minimum in a trade and let him work to find it.
I am super curious how pickens is going to handle being tagged....if he whines and complains a ton its going to really hurt the potential to get a top pick.

At the end of the day, if the cowboys could get a 2nd id do it....really hate to lose him but my biggest worry is hes going to be a giant pain and cause more issues...guess we will see

I am, too. But a lot of ill feelings can, or could, be mitigated with effective communication. Cowboys telling him (his agent really) “ we’d love to have you and want to work out a deal that still enables us to build a championship team, but understand you have wants and needs that have to be met. We understand if another team does what we can’t. No hard feelings.”

And if Lamb or Flournoy gets hurt?
were in trouble (with the current setup) - we obviously would have to have a replacement either through FA or Draft.

I am worried about picken's attitude with the tag...i think hes absolutly worth a 1 but a 2nd would at least net positive draft captial vs the 3rd we gave up to get him.

very tough situation to navigate and i think were in trouble without the weapons for Dak.

NOW...i say all this bc i am worried about how pickens is going to respond...should he respond in a team oriented manner then i think it changes the dynamic substantially.

Absolutely no way I'm taking a second for George Pickens, I'm all for giving up George Pickens for a first-round pick, and it had to be a top 10 first round pick, if it's Lower first rounder, I'm going to also want a third!!

there's no way you give away George Pickens for a second, that's just not happening,

you have these people talking about market setting money, like he a topflight, top three guy, and that's what he's going to be asking for in pay, Yet you think you can only get a 2nd for him?

which is it?

it sounds like people are at odds because if he's only worth the 2nd round pick, you should be able to sign him for 30 million Max, right?? but if you could get high first round pick a first and a third that means his value is over 35, that he's a top flight starter...

I think that's the problem here,

that's why you tag him and you see what offers there are nonexclusive tag, let's see where his value is, this will help in the negotiation process,

but I'm going to say this again there is no way I'd let him go for a 2nd..

nope

Too much is being made of this. It never hurts to pave a nice road even if it ultimately goes nowhere. Let the guy know that he's wanted, even if you are hedging. Communication is the key to any negotiation. If they can't reach a deal then trade him (if it makes good sense), or tag him and move on.

That said. He can't fold if he plays on the tag...NOT if he wants the ultimate payday next year. Nope. He has to ball like he did in 2025, or his stock will drop. He has to say and do all the right things...or his stock will drop. A locker room cancer isn't something that looks good (with his history) and the four letter networks will be manufacturing all types of crap at the slightest hint that something is amiss.

People are ALL OVER THE PLACE WITH THIS. Some of the proffered ratiocinations are bordering on fantasy. I agree. A second rounder is an absolute go-fly-a-kite deal-breaker. For a top-half first I'd give him up, but for less than that...negative.

Burning down the house wouldn't benefit him once tagged. To get the ultimate bag he would need to be on his best behavior playing on the tag...especially with his history (deserved or not). And in Dallas the networks will be salivating at the mere hint of a disgruntled player turning into a locker room cancer. Bet on it. Everything you have.

They might be far apart on initial talks. I still think the non-exclusive tag is the way to go.

So he is not going to be signed before FA starts.

Then we have to hold $$28M and the Jones will use it as an excuse to not be active early in FA. Or they will be active and sign low level players like they did last year, thinking that was going to fool fans.
Yup.

Get ready for the bargain bin.

Non exclusive tag. Let him be someone elses problem. Get a nice high draft pick this year. Grab Reese/Downs, and BPA the rest of the draft. 2027 WR class is LOADED. Restock the defense.

They can create a lot of cap space, so that $28 million will not impact what they can do in FA.

I don't think today's players and agents really care about that,

They'll find ways to spin it and posture and get fans on their side and other teams will play along..

green Bay didn't seem to care about the drama that Parsons created, I realized Jerry was part of it, but Parsons and his agent knew what they were doing, pushed it a new leve,l I mean in the NFL or other sports ,this was a bad spin out,And yet when he got to Green Bay they carried that fake back injury story to their benefit,

they know it wasn't true, but they played it like it was.

So Parsons was on a 5th year deal much like it was a franchise tag,

we thought for sure when they got close the season, that he was going to probably break is hold out ,and come play for the same reasons you're discussing up there, and that didn't happen, it was the most ridiculous ego battle between Jerry and Parsons, but Parsons agent ,which is the same agent as George Pickens, seems to like this,

He is just like Jerry, seems to know how to do spin control, and doesn't think it's bad publicity at all.

Then you were smart enough as an organization to realize you needed another WR and you signed one in the off season!!! Not that hard!!!
Other teams do it without a $30-35 million WR2, And yes, they would also draft a wide receiver very high with the assets they receive in return for George Pickens...

George Pickens would not be here if TET would have been available, booker would also not be here, because that's who was at the top of their draft board and he was gone, They were looking for a high wide receiver in the draft to put next to lamb ,they know they need one and they will take care of it.

whether that works out or not, you can't go into seasons worried about how your depth might get hurt, now you need a $30+ million insurance policy, is that what teams do?

because I don't think so, Most teams do not have two $30+ million a year wide receivers on the same team...

so yes, they will address it ,They will allow Holden and Flournoy and the receiver they draft, to battle it out in camp, see who gets WR2,

If it doesn't look right, they'll probably just go get a guy for 10+, you can get a nice receiver for that..

The desperation around here to keep George Pickens is insane, I would love to keep him, but the excuses that the other two might get hurt, that's not one of them. IMHO

I finally agree with you. I don't think it's necessary when we have major pressing needs than to have another 30 million wr

Well, I look at it this way, as much as I like George Pickens here, and maybe if he takes 30, I'm good with that, but not over 30,

But the whole concept of striking while the iron's hot, you know they say, that you should do it when your quarterbacks on a rookie deal, but you should do it when your team is young and you haven't paid out a bunch of big contracts,

I thought that was the concept in a capped league...

Once you get to where you're at with teams like Dallas, who are paying their quarterback, that much they're already paying a receiver that much, a linemen that much, a running back that much, those teams then have to build differently, and I don't understand the concept of now we need to pay the second receiver that much, because it seems to be normal, when really it's not.

Having a guy like Jefferson on one side and having a guy like Addison on a rookie deal, that's what you hope for, It might be tough to get that guy, but that is the reality, not all teams can afford two receivers that cost that much.

So yes, if it's reasonable, keep him, but if it becomes this money grab, then you have to move him.

I don't understand fans being scared to do with pretty much all teams do, you hope you finally find your elite wide receiver and you sign him, you have a great quarterback, however you rank him, it doesn't matter to me, we have a very good quarterback, We have a solid run game,

I don't see the need to have to put a second receiver on the team making that much money.

If I'm the GM, I'm running for that high first round draft pick for George Pickens, and turning it into multiple picks, getting a wide receiver in the draft, getting a better left tackle, and building the defense to be stronger, That's a good asset to have, why not consider using it.

Not that hard? You are going to sign a ALL-PRO WR in the offseason to replace Pickens? Seriously???

who said another all pro WR, you don't even know if Pickens will be the same player he is this season. In your eyes everything has to be all pro to replace an all pro!! Doesn't work like that
