Stephen: We haven’t been able to take that next step in over 20 years

At least Stephen realizes 2 Wildcard wins over a decade ain’t good enough.

Garrett better have a deep playoff run this year. No playoffs or “one and done” and he is gone.

he may have to do some serious arm twisting to get jerry jones to sign off and fire garrett.

Luckily Garrett is in the last year of his deal, so its really not firing him...……..just not offering him a new contract.

I just dont see how Stephen can go around telling everybody that Wildcard wins are not good enough and then if all Garrett wins this year is a Wildcard game, you turn around and say "good job, here is a new extension". Dont see how they do that and keep any credibility at all.

Stephen is putting the Cowboys in a corner where they will almost have no choice but to replace Garrett if the team doesn't advance farther this year.

Look how close this team was to 6-10 team until we traded for Cooper. Again why do we think we are SB contenders?
After Cooper's arrival, we ranked 3rd in TD per drive from outside the red zone, and 29th from inside the red zone. Maybe he assumes Cooper will play a full season and a healthy Frederick will make a difference in the red zone, and he bases his opinion on those things.

What's more likely is that he's just telling us Garrett's expected to go deep into the postseason to keep his job.

Stephen hasn’t actually been specific in his rhetoric. And I think it’s intentional.

Or he’s simply selling hope and stringing us along to keep the Lynch Mob at bay. Lol

You’d think after the Cowboys franchise record breaking comeback last season it wouldn’t be necessary.

Wanting this team to go further in the playoffs and expecting it too aren’t necessarily one in the same.

I can’t imagine Jerry firing Garrett if we win the division and make the playoffs 4 out of 6 years and 3 out of last 4 despite how deep we go.

Don’t take the bait from Stephen.

He didn’t specifically say he expects Garrett to go deep into the post season. Some fans are interpreting as such.

He has been specific enough.

Doesn’t take a rocket scientist to decipher “not good enough” when asked about Garrett’s playoff record.

Do you consider 2 wildcard wins over a decade a good job? Would you give a head coach a new extension with that resume? Stephen apparently has his doubts.

He does realize he was a big reason in that.

“We all know where we ended up last year and we don’t think that’s good enough. We feel like we have a team that can take the next step. We want to compete & win championships. We haven’t been able to take that next step in over 20 years.”

Where in this statement did he specifically state anything?

This is right out of Daddy’s rhetoric aligning or appeasing to the criticism to spur hope and present a perception they know what they’re doing. Lol

Sure fans and the Cowboys want to take the next step. And the only other item he said with certainty is they believe they have a team than take the next step. That’s not the same as saying they should be taking the next step. Or they expect to take the next step.

It doesn’t matter what you and I think.

Nowhere in this comment by Stephen has he placed any ultimatum on Garrett. You’re reading into it what you want to. You’ve taken the bait.

I think it's quite clear Garrett has to start delivering soon or they will be forced to make a change.

Only Garrett supporters like yourself can't see this train coming.

Then where is the extension?

And if Stephen is just saying this to keep the fans at bay, what happens if the team doesn’t advance further? Makes Stephen looks like a liar and the fans really will be pissed then.

I don’t think Stephen wants to be seen as a liar. He actually seems to care what people think. Look how hard he pushed back on the allegations the team was just happy to be in the playoffs?

They just made it to the second round and no new deal for Garrett. The rhetoric is he's coaching for a contract and a 1 and done in January won't cut it. He's no longer playing under a comfortable long term deal. Crap or get off the pot. That's the position he's in right now. Pressures on!!

In fairness, Garrett had to coach on the final year of his contract a few years ago too. When Garrett's first contract came up, Jones let him coach that final year without a new contract. So this isn't new.
