Stephen: We will not have contract talks with Pickens

You nailed it earlier…the Cowboys negotiate through the media. And the timing here is suspect, the day before the draft. Now Jerry says they have received trade calls.

It is a possibility that a deal can be made and they are trying to apply pressure to get it over the finish line. And if the deal includes picks this year, making this statement the day before the draft might make more sense.
Yeah I would agree. I didn't think there was a chance Pickens would be traded 24 hours ago, but this feels like a negotiation tactic. You're pretty spot on in that the timing of this may be to help the Cowboys leverage a trade. It will be interested to keep an eye on the next couple days.

He'll coast.

With executives, you heavily tie their compensation to performance and time commitment. You can't really do that with pro athletes, so it's intensely risky. Only the truly driven can handle the comfort of a long-term deal and maintain their drive.
I agree. Thats the world I live in, my pay is also directly linked to my production so I have to be driven daily.

In fact that is the only way I would trust Pickens long term. Heavily incentive laden deal.

Not a surprise at all. They've shown no interest in resigning Pickens, even though Jerry said for months that trading Micah meant being able to pay Pickens. Also that we would have 5-6 impact players, but so far are only at 1.
jerry has been known to stretch the truth a little

I actually like this approach. Guy is probably looking for $40 million a year based on who his agent is. He would need to give me another year of outstanding production and good behavior before I gave him that type of money. I’m a little scared that when he gets paid we might see another side of Pickens. His potential cost, draft compensation required in a trade, and past behaviors are probably why no team has approached Dallas about a trade.

We have already seen that side before he got paid.

Why people ignore these things because he has a star on his helmet always makes me laugh.

Good.

Never commit to uncommitted players.
Well, they KINDA committed to him when they traded for him. They already committed something like $27.3 mill to him.

They've once again unnecessarily and inexplicably placed themselves in a position of having a drama-filled camp.

Wash, rinse, repeat.

Can't change the culture if the culture continues down the same path. Clearly they don't get it and its exhausting to watch it every year.

This just doesn’t make a lot of sense. Jerry has done some dumb stuff in the past, but why announce this so early in the offseason? Training camp is still 4 months away. Now Pickens has no incentive to sign it anytime before September, and has the option to wait until week 9 if he’s feeling petty, which he has the right to with a statement so belittling like this

Feign negotiations, say “whelp, too bad we couldn’t come to an agreement”, show him hospitality and let him down easy, then pull this stuff next offseason when you kick him to the curb. It almost seems intentionally insulting to proclaim this to the media today. I don’t remember a single time a team tagged a player and then turned around and said they refused to entertain a long term contract before negotiations even really got heavy. So Dallas tagged him because they don’t want him around after 2026 and just want to take the lump sum franchise tag cap hit right now? The window ends in December or they don’t like him as a fit anymore?
You talking about the Jones boys. I bet David gave them the parameters of the contract and it was probably 40 million a season. The Joneses were hoping for 30 million. The Cowboys hopes were to tag Pickens twice and get 3 seasons at 60 million. Not gonna happen wth that agent.

Nope. They were trying to get one over on him. Again. And failed lol. Bet you Jerry remembers his name now.

They think he will play better on the tag.
But why make the statement in April, the day before the draft. To me, this doesn’t pass the smell test.

Several weeks ago he said they have long-term plans for Pickens and they will work within the timeframe of the deadline (July 15th). Three weeks later and the day before the draft he says no negotiations, he will play on the tag?

I don’t buy it.

This was their intention from the start. They were never going to sign GP to a long term contract this offseason.

Whether they trade him tomorrow or after the draft who knows? Whether they select Jordyn Tyson tomorrow...who knows? Archer may know something.
Agreed. But I just dont see how this announcement in April benefits anyone involved.

You said yesterday "HE WILL BE SIGNED".

This doesnt seem that way at all.

If this is true. Trading a 3rd for him was even more dumb then I originally thought.
I did expect a long term deal, but if it happens this year or next year makes no difference.

Why say that?? What’s the upside, except to potentially piss Pickens’ camp off?

Neither of the Jones idiots has a CLUE what the phrase “no comment” means. My goodness just shut it already.

I guess they’ve graduated from ‘our phone is always on’ to not taking calls at all.
Why do you ask a question on line one and then answer it yourself on line two

It's only a drama filled preseason if Pickens brings the drama. It is 100% in his best interest to show up, give his best and be a positive influence in the locker room and on the practice field. Pouting and half arsing it only gets the football world shaking their collective heads and muttering "I guess all the talk about him was true".

Only downside for the Cowboys is the cap hit this year. I'd want to see him one more season before I committed long term. Bonus that he has a tiny bit of a reason to pout and show who he really is.

28 million bucks is a heck of a reason to get over yourself and get to work so you can positively market yourself into even more massive future earnings.

There are no victims here.

I don't expect a trade at all. We want the drama. The ball is in Picken's court as to how much if any drama there is. A normal team would be about business; we are not a normal team.
