Stephen: We will not have contract talks with Pickens

Why say that?? What’s the upside, except to potentially piss Pickens’ camp off?

Neither of the Jones idiots has a CLUE what the phrase “no comment” means. My goodness just shut it already.

I guess they’ve graduated from ‘our phone is always on’ to not taking calls at all.

This just doesn’t make a lot of sense. Jerry has done some dumb stuff in the past, but why announce this so early in the offseason? Training camp is still 4 months away. Now Pickens has no incentive to sign it anytime before September, and has the option to wait until week 9 if he’s feeling petty, which he has the right to with a statement so belittling like this

Feign negotiations, say “whelp, too bad we couldn’t come to an agreement”, show him hospitality and let him down easy, then pull this stuff next offseason when you kick him to the curb. It almost seems intentionally insulting to proclaim this to the media today. I don’t remember a single time a team tagged a player and then turned around and said they refused to entertain a long term contract before negotiations even really got heavy. Never a dull moment

I mean you have Howie Roseman as your teams GM.
Reading stuff from the Jones must be like trying to comprehend Beetlejuice on Howard Stern.

Well, Boy George would certainly not be happy with the Culture Club about to take place in Dallas. I don't see any solution to this except for GP to sign the tag, and demands he gets traded now? GP will undoubtedly be either a malcontent all year or just not care to play. if he remains on the roster. Which now begs the question, why on earth did the idiots trade for him in the first place?
They want to see if Pickens is a chameleon and changes his color.

Cowboys win more than most, so it’s not like it’s a disaster. For some reason some of this stuff kind of works, it’s just weird. Entertaining at least

That would be decidedly incorrect.
Then you've never done it well. You never commit to proven malcontents.

Pickens is good, but he's not that good, so you have to keep him in the interviewing process. Sign him long term with guaranteed money, and you get Trevon all over again.

You mean he will get a concussion and not admit what happened for months?

All those who wanted to defend Jerry …

You were told that they never had the slightest intention of even attempting to negotiate. They had him by the balls and Jerry loves to squeeze.

Now comes the whispers to their media lackeys when GP rightfully stays away from OTAs
The other teams already distrust Pickens. If he causes a stir he hurts his own wallet when he leaves.

The tag is also horrible news for the Cowboys cap, but that's a different argument. IMO there is no reason that Pickens should be either traded or extended before the draft.
You nailed it earlier…the Cowboys negotiate through the media. And the timing here is suspect, the day before the draft. Now Jerry says they have received trade calls.

It is a possibility that a deal can be made and they are trying to apply pressure to get it over the finish line. And if the deal includes picks this year, making this statement the day before the draft might make more sense.

Wow, our owner and his dimwitted sons need to shut their mouths! All they are doing is antagonizing Pickens to the point that he will not show up until the start of the season and even then will give at least 50% of his talent on the field.

He'll coast.

With executives, you heavily tie their compensation to performance and time commitment. You can't really do that with pro athletes, so it's intensely risky. Only the truly driven can handle the comfort of a long-term deal and maintain their drive.

Not a surprise at all. They've shown no interest in resigning Pickens, even though Jerry said for months that trading Micah meant being able to pay Pickens. Also that we would have 5-6 impact players, but so far are only at 1.
