I think Mendenhall will be long gone by the time we pick. I have a feeling Jerry Jones already has his eye on Felix Jones.

i really think we need to picka WR with our first two picks. if you know me that statement goes against my nature. My problem is that by the time our 2nd rounder comes around were going to have all the decnt WR prospects gone. The value drops off huge. On the other hand RBs will still be there.

Now a scenario where we could trade down from 28 and then use that 3extra pick to move up from 61 would be ideal because i think the top of the second is the sweet spot but there is no way to bank on it.

Give me Felix the Cat, even if we have to take him at # 28. We can get a WR with our second round pick. Maybe we even package some later round picks to move up in the second round. The difference between Slaton and Felix Jones? Slaton played in the Big Least. Jones played where the real men play, the SEC. You tell me which team played the toughest competition over their careers? I already know the answer.

Big East is good comp as well IMO. SEC is better comp but I don't think you can compair the production on these two backs. One, Jones had McFadden in the backfield as well. That can be viewed as good or bad. Less carries but also less focus on stopping Jones. The production is good at 2956 yards in 3 seasons but it's not comparable to 3923 by Slaton.

I don't think you can evaluate these players evenly based on one playing in the SEC and one in the Big East.

Depends on who's available. I wouldn't be upset if we took him in the 2nd or 3rd. He's a quality change of pace back for Marion.

This is pretty much exactly how I feel about it. I wouldn't be unhappy with Slaton.

I have friends that go to WVU with him and they told me he's been playin hurt but they never said he was soft.

Slaton in the third round would be an incredible bargain.

I would even consider trading up higher into the second to get him.

This whole draft is going to be odd thanks to the ridiculous idea to have "Day Two" begin with the third round.

Coach Parcells can peddle that choice for whatever he wants. It will be a primo selection.

I was a little concerned that he didn't gut it out in their bowl game. It seemed like he could have gotten back out there if he really wanted.

You were a little concerned ???

Listen, the guy is a football player, he has played football his entire life, .. he ran for over 200 yds against the almighty SEC Champ Georgia as a Freshman, and now as a Jr. he is playing in a January Bowl game again on National TV, .. so please tell me why would he not "really want" to play in that game? Unless of course he had unfortunately pulled a hamstring.

Can you explain your thinking on that?

McFadden got knocked cold in the Alabama game. He was seen sneaking the smelling salts on the sideline and after he found out they took his helmet so he couldn't go back in, he stole the helmet of a backup LB and ran out into the huddle. He rushed for a touchdown on the very next play.

He had badly bruised ribs during the middle of the season and refused to skip a game. He conitnued to carry the ball 20+ times a game and continued taking a pounding and fought through the pain.

When he suffered his toe injury, his big toe was almost completely separated from his foot. It was literally hanging by a thread. They inserted a steel rod and told him he was done for the year. Instead, he played in the very first game. Was he 100%? Not even close. Try 10% but he was out there.

In the SEC Championship game against Florida, he suffered a high ankle sprain but refused to come out of the game, perhaps to the detriment of his team. He stayed on the field and limped through the rest of the game.

Some RB's are warriors. Think Emmit Smith against the Giants with the shoulder injury. Some RB's aren't. When I see Slaton standing on the sideline during a bowl game, when his injury didn't appear to severe, I get "concerned" that he might not be one of the warriors.

His toe was seperated from his foot, hanging by a thread ??? :D that is a myth my friend, ... think about it.

I read an article about McFadden earlier this year where he was on the sidelines at the end of several critical games that Arkansas lost. (FL & Wisconsin last year, Alabama & Kentucky this year I think)

Every RB gets hurt and can't play at some point.

No running back or WR play with a torn hamstring, no matter how tough they are.

Did anyone see the College All Star skills competition this past weekend? Mike Hart, Jamal Charles, Tashard Choice, Mendenhall, and J Stewart all competed in those gimmicky drills. It was very interesting. Mendenhall, Stewart, and Choice are some big boys.

How did I miss that? :banghead:

But to what theo was saying... No one likes speed more than I do, but I'm adamant that we shouldn't target a "speed back" just because Barber is on the slower side. Just get the best back, not the best fast back. Look at, say, Chester Taylor and AD. They aren't dramatically different styles of back, but they still work as a tandem because Taylor is just a good player.

If we have to have a situational scatback, we can get a guy like Tatum Bell for peanuts in FA.

Now if the best back happens to have great speed, perfect. But don't force it.

He TORE his hamstring??

Yes, he TORE his hamstring.

What you need to recover quickly

A pulled or torn hamstring is usually the result of overloading one of the hamstring muscles on the back of the upper leg. The muscle fibers tear, causing pain and internal bleeding within the hamstring. Because of this internal bleeding, the muscle can go into spasm, essentially "locking down."

http://www.chiherbal.com/pulled-hamstring-recovery-kit.htm?gclid=CPehlsy5xJECFQJRlgodrVxADw

On the other hand, if your muscles are improperly trained or injured, you may end up with significant problems. Many of us have seen the serious consequences of an abrupt muscle tear: A sprinter rounding the turn suddenly drops, clutching a torn hamstring.

Here's a nice 6 page thread from a West Virginia board speculating whether or not he faked that "injury". Seems like even his own fans are questioning him:

http://www.wemustignitethiscouch.com/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?post_id=62828
If that was supposed to convince someone, maybe you should find a thread where more than two posters think he faked it.
With one only asking, and not accusing.

There are morons on every board.

Back to my original question, why would he fake an injury?

If you know Steve, and can say that he did fake it, then I guess he did.

But if you don't know him, and are only basing your opinion of him on your love for DMac, then give it a rest.

You asked me to explain my thinking and I did. I posted that thread because it appears even some diehard WV fans were speculating that he might not have been that hurt.

Not being Mr. Slaton's personal physician, I can't say whether he was seriously injured or not. It didn't appear that was the case though.

All I'm saying is that his sitting out a game of that importance with an apparent minor injury makes me question his toughness. It's impossible to know if he was really hurt or if he was pulling a Malcolm Kelly and just playing it safe for the draft.
