Carolina Panthers receiver Steve Smith has been hoping to get on the team another pass-catcher who can take some of the pressure off one of the best wideouts in the game.

Last year, the Panthers used a second-round pick on Dwayne Jarrett, a guy whom many expected to be a first-rounder, but who slid due to subpar pre-draft workouts. The Panthers felt so strongly about Jarrett that they dumped Keyshawn Johnson.

But Jarrett played in only seven games a year ago, catching only six passes for 73 yards for the entire campaign.

On Monday, Smith sounded off about Jarrett’s possible future, if he doesn’t turn things around.

Asked if Jarrett is due for a coming-out party in his second NFL season, Smith said, “You know, the party session is actually over. This is the NFL. You make plays. You’re here to play football. You do the party scene at your own discretion, but on Sundays, we’re here to play football. If you can’t play football, you won’t be playing with the Carolina Panthers or any NFL team.”

And then Smith said that his comments aren’t “a poke at anybody.” Even though he was responding to a direct question about Dwayne Jarrett.

I think someone should call out Romo too  :D

Between giving Jessica Simpson kidney infections and worrying about his golf handicap I don't know that he has time to listen to any criticism.

I'd love to have a guy with Steve Smith's attitude on the team.

The guy sucker punched his teammate and was suspended for it. He also called out his coach saying he shouldn't and wouldn't ever PR again after he fumbled a PR and lost the Panthers a game a while back.

I wouldn't want that type of guy on the team.

Give me a guy who will cry for his qb or one that will push his teammates like Irvin did, without crossing the line.

That was a good bit in the past, in all fairness, and his words and actions since then have shown a change in maturity.

It's fine to keep it in mind, since people never seem to forgive other malcontents while glossing over things guys like Smith do, but I dont think he's the same guy.

Steve Smith has matured alot since his entry into the league. As for him not wanting to be a PR. The guy is the Panthers #1 receiver. Not sure I'd want my #1 receiver out there returning punts either.

Just going by reports and whatnot, he's turned into a really good professional...on and off the field.

So basically if you could do it all over again, you wouldn't want Michael Irvin, who also called out coaches and beat up a teammates (slashing one with scissors no less)?

You take your crybabies, I'll take the warriors. Let's see how wins more games/championships.

It was not a full time move. It was one time deal and he complained because he fumbled away the game. Had he scored, he would have taken all the credit.

Of course you don't want your #1 wr PR full time, no less that the Cowboys want their #1 CB doing it. But if they have to once in a while to help your team win, you do and suck it up and do it. You don't blast your coach if things go badly.

I'll take T.O's crybaby *** over Smith anyday.

Micahel Irvin never sucker punched a teammate; the whole scissors happened over something NOT fooball related.

Besides I don't ever recall Irvin calling out a teammate, twice, using the media. He was the type of player who would have tried to take Jarrett under his wing as opposed to trying and make him look bad through the press.

Maybe it was a one time deal.. But look at it like this. This guy is the #1 receiver. He's on the field for probably 90% of the offensive plays and you want him to return punts?

Yeah he could probably shut up and play, but you don't pay him to return punts. It's a legit gripe...one made during a piss-poor season.

People sometimes say things in the heat of the moment they wouldn't normally say. And they live and learn. Big deal.

I think in this case you're making excuses for him, WD. He plays football, he should do whatever the coach asks of him, especially when the chips are down.

The fact of the matter is that it insulted his pride, not him as a person to be asked to do it. This was some time ago however, so I'm sure he's matured.

I actually like Steve Smith a lot, but if T.O. gets asked to play safety on Sunday (as he has done several times) and says "No.", there's a 3,000 word essay on it come Monday.

No, they don't.

Oh ok, as long as it's not football related then it's ok to stab your teammate with scissors.

By far, the dumbest freakin' thing ever posted here. And that is saying A LOT.

And about Irvin calling out teammates, I guess you don't remember him talking about the team his rookie year, how they were only there to collect paychecks?
