Let me begin by noting that I believe McFadden and Randle's running styles are a perfect fit behind our elite zone-blocking offensive line. But their are a number of critics (or Negative-Nancy's) that don't believe this combo will work and are predicting the worst because Murray is gone. They are the same people that ignore how much our team has improved despite the loss of Murray. The defense has improved considerably and if the preseason is any indication...this Defense could be very formidable and feared. This will give the Offense plenty of opportunities to score and quite possibly a shorter field to do so. On Offense, the OL got better with high profile additions and all the young WR's seem to have made a jump in the positive direction. The only question mark seems to be folks belief in our current RB stable.

That leads me to this question:
I'll assume Randle and McFadden are making the team as "co-starters". And although I like Dunbar's skill set and promise, he seems to always find a way to be a Non-factor during games.. but somehow, He'll probably make this team again. The real question is the fourth and likely final RB spot. I'm sure the Boys will search the waivers before this is all done and if I was betting.. they will bring someone else in before this is all said and done. That said, the naysayers keep bring up the "dirty yards", "pass-protecting", and "health" as the biggest concerns. Do we hand the fourth spot to Tyler Clutts? Has he done enough to deserve the spot.. or better yet, How much of a difference does he make for this team?

I know a lot of folks are going to roll their eyes, but how bout Steven Jackson? Yes, he's old. He isn't the player he used to be. But he wouldn't have to be as the back-up to our back-up. What he is... He was the PFF #3 rated RB in pass-protection last year. At 6'2" 240, he's a big back that is still capable to get the "dirty yards", just watch the hit he put on the Commanders player in the End Zone in the link below. He would be perfect in obvious passing situations to protect Romo, yet still capable out of the backfield on play action passes. He's been in the league long enough to understand defensive schemes and would also excel behind this line when needed in spot duty. And best of all, He wants to be here as evident by his tweeter account. He's still not signed due to the youth movement at RB in the NFL. If signed at a reasonable Vet Minimum, I believe he could prove to be more valuable than Tyler Clutts.

I like the idea of McFadden, Randle, Jackson, and (for whatever reason) Dunbar manning the back field.

Jackson is old - I watched him in Atlanta and at first contact he fell over. I think they like Clutts on special teams, his blocking is decent and he can catch the ball out of the backfield.

good points... note: this post is strictly hypothetical as I'm curious what others think of the idea.

Would take Jackson over Dunbar right now. Could be another Otis Anderson on championship caliber team.

Jackson might work if your goal is getting the people who don't think the RB position is good enough. It would maybe settle some of them down.

However, if your goal is to improve the RB position and the team, I honestly don't think Jackson does that much. Clutts is a hard working special teams player in addition to being a decent FB. What he can provide from the FB spot and on special teams is more, IMO, than what Jackson would provide in short yardage situations.

If the team does want a bigger back for short yardage, there will be cheaper options at team cutdowns and those guys will likely help on special teams more than Jackson, will cost less than Jackson, and will probably be less likely to get injured than Jackson.

So, in conclusion... while Jackson might shut some fans up for a bit, he would probably do very little to help the team and he wouldn't come cheaply. So no, I wouldn't sign him.

If they ever pick up a vet RB it would be after game 1 (not guaranteed then) and it would likely be Felix. Despite reports they claim he looked impressive. Now that is without knowing who might be released.

Jackson did lead the Falcons in rushing last year, but that's not saying much..I know. But he did also have 37 rushing 1st downs and 6TDs behind a horrible OL. Just saying.. ok, I'm done
