Last I heard, JJ Abrams owns the rights to turn the books into a movie and said he'd start working on a film or tv version of it after Lost was over. Wouldn't be surprised to see something announced for 2013 soonish.

The way the book is laid out, they would have to blow it out of the water to get a movie series made, no production company will commit to 7+ movies.

I think JJ Abram eventually declined the project. Ron Howard and Brian Grazer have taken over, at least to some of the sources i've found.
