I know the flash and hype is generated around the Moore offense, is getting all the headlines, but I still have concerns about the Defense- and its ‘the defense that still continues to remain our doom and downfall in the playoffs – it’s been this unit that sends us home for good.
Will we better than this as the season gets going and we meet top offensive NFL teams?

My concerns:
Lack of pass rush and still not as solid vs run as we need to be.. Still the lack of turnovers and
I still think we have concerns in the interior middle on the DL.
And the LB play was up and down, imo LVE not only slipped in that big Barkley run, but both he or Jaylon was up and down.

So much was hyped and built up about the depth of the DL, but what about the quality of this depth ?

I’ll say it again, I do not like having Crawford as an end, we are at a downgrade when he has to start there, and he is far less of a productive rusher there than what he is as a nickel 3 tech.but he is remains a Marinelli fav and trustee.
I’m so ready for a permanent change and upgrade vs Crawford at DE. Quinn is such a big pleasant surprise hope for me.

I didn’t think rotation guys like Armstrong and Hyder had much stand out effectiveness as i hoped as pass rushers either, ... either the Giants OL is more decent than what is generally thought, ..or we are still overrated as a defensive line unit.

- Giants still had over 400+ yards of offense,
- Eli had over 306 yrd passing and a TD,
- barkley had 120 yards on just 11 carries,
- immobile Eli was only sacked once.
- TE Evan ingram normally non factor vs us, had a career day with 11 catches for 111 yards and a TD,
- And it wasn’t’ dink and dunk as NYG had 7.1 per play avg.
- Cheeto is still getting beat deep.. and still not getting his head turned to make plays- (much better in forward than he is turn & go)
- and we still are not getting the INTs from this DB unit.

The bright spots ?
-Despite the yards surrendered, NYG only got 17 total points – the last 7 given up with soft play
with the game largely in check.
-NYG was only 2 out of 11 on 3rd down conversions
- A couple of huge 4th down stops to thwart NYG threats
-Woods caused a fumble that NYG recovered.
- Dlaw seemed to be coming on as game wore on, after out so long this summer

When we eventually come to play the better offensive teams, the better QBs (brady, brees, Rodgers, wentz, goff) we are going to be far better challenged than what we were vs Eli and the Giants.

Saquon is going to make a lot of defenses look stupid

Eli always moves the ball on us and we never really sack him that much anyways

We played bend but don’t break and played it well we didn’t give up long passes (maybe 2) that’s it and when we got up by double digits we forced them to move the ball little by little wasting the clock

It takes a few week for the running game and run defense to really round into form. Those 2 aspects of the game require practice, not shorts but padded and full throttle to get the conditioning, the timing down, etc. The way camps are run these days, the first couple of games is the only true practice they get. I am going to hold off on panicking until around week 3 or 4.

You're not going to get a pass rush when the ball leaves the QB's hands in 2 seconds. It's not like Eli was sitting back there and finding WRs down the field all night. When a team dinks and dunks (see NO), it's impossible to get pressure.

We really allowed 10 points until it didn't really matter. Yards and other stats aren't a major concern when the offense doubles the opposing teams score. That's the idea of the defensive scheme vs. NY. They brought the front 4 and didn't blitz. They kept NY from being an offensive threat. And other than one huge run, they contained Barkley for the most part.
This doesn't mean it won't change according to who we play.

Dallas scored a TD in the first 5 possessions, what more do you want?

At the moment, I can't say the defense is really any better than last year's. But it is essentially last year's defense, which was mostly good but had a few standout bad efforts.

Our line right now is basically still Lawrence, Woods, Collins and Crawford, with a downgrade from Gregory. We need Hyder, Armstrong or Charlton to step up, but didn't get it Sunday (with Charlton inactive). Our linebackers are pretty much the same except a healthier Lee getting the snaps at SLB when we actually use three linebackers (which I think we should do more with the talent we have there) and our secondary is virtually unchanged.

It may take until Quinn returns for us to truly see a difference, if he can be a persistent pass-rushing presence to pair with Lawrence.

I will gladly take holding the opponent under 20 points each week, though. If we do that, we'll win the majority of our games.

Go back a few games.

Against the Eagles we were shredded in the fourth quarter. Indy had a 100 yard rusher. The Bucs had quite a few yards against us. The Giants scored 35 points and had a 100 yard rusher against us. We had a good performance vs the Seahawks, but the Rams had two 100 yard rushers. Last Sunday we allowed 470 yards.

So six of our last seven games had our defense not playing well. Is that due to scheme, talent, effort? Is it correctable? I think it is.

Fortunately, we kept the scores in check. But if we allow a ton of yardage vs good teams....we are in trouble.

Not really for me. Even if our defense performs at the exact same level as last season, the changes made within this offense will be enough IMO, to put us in the final lap.

I do think our defense will be better than last season anyway. We're still missing some components there as well.

We forced three fumbles and recovered two. Unless you mean lack of interceptions, I don't think it is reasonable to expect more than a couple of turnovers per game.
lack of pressure, bad tackling, no INTs and cant stop the run.. so Yes be concerned but also hopeful they clean it up..

As a general statement, overall, I'm not going to get overly concerned about the Defense, just yet. As I see it, we are looking at, yet another change in the game, where Defense is concerned. For the longest time, Defenses were always ahead of Offenses in the game. Now, because of rule changes, Defenses don't really hit anymore. You don't really practice what you play in the real games so it seems as if Defenses are always behind the curve, in terms of actually being ready to play at their real potential, a lot of times. I think we have to wait and see where we are in a few weeks before we jump to any rash conclusions.

Yeh, and watch how we will see highlights next week and so how another NFL team get 4 and 5 sacks on eli as well as INTs, and eli has certainly shown and proven he's that kind of INT mistake prone QB

And ironically the last three times we've played against this Latimer dude vs Giants hes managed to get deep and burn us downfield

you have to look at the game in sections. first half we give like 180 yards or so with one big play to Barkley, which was due to missed assignments. then we went up by 28-7 and dallas went into prevent defense mode, dropping 6 or even 7 and rushing with only 4 against their 5 or 6. giving up yards, but not scores. so there was a lot of empty yards in the second half. by the 4th quarter we had the reserves in playing mostly and it turned sloppy.

we did put some pressure on Eli specially in the first half and mostly without blitzes or bringing in a lot of people, mostly with 4 and 5 man fronts. couple of times we rushed LVE or Smith and they were able to pressure Eli to throw quickly. no need to show your whole book since the opposition was week and you had the game in the bag.

Am I worried? no. am I concerned? yes. I think we will be fine.

I guess its just game 1 so i wont over react but my biggest concern is tackling now i get that it was Barkley and hell make a lot of people miss but the player has to commit to the tackle. The other thing is like you mentioned is the scoring wasn't that much in spite of the yards.

I was listening on the fan and I don't think Marinelli gives a crap about yards. He has always implemented this bend don't break attitude as long as you limit scoring he dont care if you give up a 1000 yards (insert exagerration emoji)
I read where the cowboys were 6th in the league in scoring defense last year but middle of the pack in yards allowed and sadly the cowboys appear to be good with that.

The problem is that I think anyway that philosophy eventually bites you in the ***. I cant stand the tampa 2 especially if a Warren Sapp isn't my DT. I think I got my stats right but i forgot to runi it by Xwalker so my apologies ahead of time if they are off

Until we find out IF our DL was severely outmatched by an upper class OL:)confused:) or they just underperformed due to lack of talent..DL will remain a concern throughout the year.

LBs seem to have the skill and talent, just had a "meh" performance

Secondary was wildly inconsistent it seems, we just have to hope Byron comes back full force, and the other few yahoos play along.

I don't like to look too far ahead, but New Orleans is coming up..and they've got some offensive firepower

lack of pressure, bad tackling, no INTs and cant stop the run.. so Yes be concerned but also hopeful they clean it up..

Didn't say that those things weren't concerns. However, the OP mentioned turnovers as being a problem and we got two ... so turnovers weren't a problem in that game unless our expectations are higher than the reality. It would have been nice to come away with some interceptions, but forcing three fumbles and recovering two is a good defensive effort in the turnover category.

My biggest concern from Sunday was that Jaylon Smith and Leighton Vander Esch both looked bad.

Why is Jaylon in the game on 3rd down instead of Lee? Lee is far better in coverage.

Bingo!!!!!! I think the entire game plan was centered around stopping this kid........
