Strange thought: Jeff Ireland, trade up deal involving Dolphins-Cowboys?

I was just thinking what if the Cowboys agree to let Jeff Ireland go on the condition that the Dolphins swap their No. 1 pick with our lower No. 1s.

It's probably far-fetched but would pro-McFadden posters approve of such an arrangement (I know anti-McFadden posters wouldn't) or/and do you think it would be a bad move for the Dolphins?

Keeping Ireland should be as big a priority as keeping any of our top talent.

I agree with you...

It is a strange thought, very far fetched.

Sounds like something Otero would cook up.

Felix said on local radio interview today that he is staying at Arkansas next year. A lot can happen still.

Throw in the 'Fins 2nd rounder and it's more doable to me. As much as I would hate to lose Ireland, JJ probably "owes" Huezinga(sp?) for letting us have JG. This could be the payback between the two owners. I don't have to like it BUT I'm not in the Circle of 32, i.e. Billionaire Boys Club (NFL owners) and this may be how they do business.....

To Dolphins:
Ireland
#1 (Cleveland's)
#1 (our own)

To Cowboys:
#1 overall pick
#2 (Dolphins)

I think the 2nd rounder makes it more palatable.....

Hell no - they want Ireland, its should cost them a 1st and a 3rd - just like a tendered FA.

Jeff Ireland could be the difference between hitting on 5 out of 7 picks a year and 3 out of 7 picks a year. Over 4-5 years, that's quite a hit. He's worth much more than just a first rounder.

I was afraid that would happen once they got Petrino. :(

He is free to go if given GM and final say by Parcells. We then get no compensation.

But he wouldn't be given final say. Parcells can argue all he wants, but if all Parcell's position was designed to accomplish is to find a GM and HC, then there's no reason to have a 4 year contract. The extended contract shows that he'll be there for the next 4 years making decisions.

Bill is probably already looking to acquire our 2, 1st round picks already, no matter what happens w/ Ireland

This is all contingent on Ireland WANTING to go (should Parcells even want him)...

We can't just trade him for picks...

I'm glad to hear that. He can showcase himself.

One thing that I do remember reading about Ireland (sorry, can't provide the link) was his strong desire to stay out of the spotlight. His preference is to be one of those "behind-the-scenes" kinda guys. Becoming the GM for the Dolphins (or any GM position in the NFL for that matter) and your anonymity pretty much goes right out the window, so there's at least that working in the Cowboys' favor if they're hoping to retain him. Money certainly won't be an issue with him as it has been pointed out here several times over that JJ's pockets run deep so he'll pony up the big bucks if Ireland tries to use this as leverage to get a nice fat raise.

Considering what Ireland has done for this organization since he was promoted and there's no question as to why Parcells wants him down in Miami. Seriously, the man flat-out produces and deserves the same amount of credit that JJ and Parcells shared in for making the Cowboys the team that they are today. This is no different than the relationship Tex, Landry & Gil Brandt shared with each other when they created that great Cowboys team back in the 70s. That's why there should be absolutely no doubt in anyone's mind that JJ will do whatever it takes to keep this guy happy and (ph)at for as long as he desires to stay here in Dallas. ;)

I'm not sure what his family situation is. If he is looking for a stable job and no career arc this is the place for him.

If he wants to be a GM and more, Parcells and Miami offers him a lot. Parcells is not young and today stated he doesn't want to be GM.

Actually that is incorrect. That rule of "moving up" applies to coaches only, not front office personnel. Ireland is under contract and could only go if Jones releases him from his contract. This was discussed at length on NFL Network just last week.

That being said, it was also discussed that it would be unlikely for Jones to keep Ireland in Dallas if Ireland truly wanted to leave for a GM job.
