Strengths of this team now?

Pretty fair summary but IMO there's no way you can count CB as a strength when there are so many open questions and "ifs".
I mean if they are healthy which is a “if” lol they are one of the best in the league. They have two All Pro corners.

I’m curious to what Elam can offer. I expect nothing but if he use this change of scenery as a fresh start? Between Elam, Carson, Butler, Israel…someone has to step up.

Yeah the potential is there....but too many ifs right now for me to call it a strength quite yet.

Left Tackle: Tyler Guyton, Asim Richards, Hakeem Adeniji
Right Tackle: Terence Steele, Hakeem Adeniji, Ajani Cornelius, Matt Waletzko

See any potential problems there?
  • Tyler Smith (G)
  • Cooper Beebe (C)
  • Tyler Booker (G)
  • Brock Hoffman (G/C)
  • Rob Jones (G)
  • J. Bass (G)
  • Saahdiq Charles (G)
  • Hakeem Adeniji (G/T)
  • Dakoda Shepley (G/C)
  • Nate Thomas (G/C)
This group and strength of depth will make Prescott successful and make the running game dominate in a run and play action with the speed strength at receivers and tight ends.

WR: Lamb and Pickens are a strength though the depth behind them is lacking.
IOL will be good with some good depth

Edge rush has both talent and depth. I hope the new kid they drafted does well but having williams back and bringing back fowler really helps.
CB- This unit looks like a really looking good. Bland clearly a starter but then you have Carson, Elam, Revel all competing while Diggs works his way back from injury. Solid group on paper, should be some good camp battles.

I think the strength of our team is the belief in ourselves and what we can do as a team. It's mental. It's confidence. Much of winning is just that. This is coming from our leader, Brian Shottenheimer.

After the trade for Pickens, the wide receiver position projects as a strength of the offense.

Offensive strengths

WR: Lamb and Pickens have the potential to be one of the top duos in the league. Turpin adds some burst and quickness to the third-receiver role, and while neither Tolbert or Mingo had shown reason to believe they could be a No. 2, they may also be good No. 3 options. When the debate is who will win the No. 3 job, you have to feel pretty good about the position.

IOL: I don't want to include the tackles in this because they are iffy, but the interior offensive line could be one of the best in football. Of course, when two of the three starters are first-round picks, it should be one of the best in football. Smith-Beebe-Booker could form a formidable wall in the passing game that allows Prescott to step up into the pocket on his throws and could open up the inside running game with their physicality.

Defensive strengths

Pass rush: With Micah Parsons, the pass rush was going to be one of the strengths of his team. Adding Dante Fowler coming off a 10-sack season was set to add to it, but then we also added one of the top pass-rush DEs in the draft. On top of that, Odighizuwa gets quite a bit of pressure even if he's not as dominant as you'd like and Thomas is more of a pass rusher than run defender. It will be interesting to see if Sam Williams has anything to add to that coming off his injury and if Kneeland is able to develop his pass rush.

Cornerbacks: This one is iffy because of the injuries and the loss of Jourdan, but landing Shavon Revel gives this group a chance to be really good, especially if Diggs can make it back at some point. Even though Elam wore out his welcome in Buffalo, he may be a good fit on the outside for the coverage scheme Eberflus likes to use the most. If Revel is not able to go at the start of the year and Diggs doesn't come back till late, the unit may take some lumps before settling in as the year progresses.

Special teams strengths

This unit is our best from top to bottom. We have one of the top kickers in the league (perhaps the very best), one of the top punt returners in the league (perhaps the very best) and a punter who is at least near the top. The long snapper has been a decent find as well. Thank you, Bones. You weren't the best when it came to decisions to take risks, but you have an eye for special teams talent.
Only omitted the LBs , with addition if sanborn and murray and drafting shemar they are atleast addressing the position , we need to see if this unit can stop the run , but promising

This one had too many question marks for me. We got Murray for cheap because he lacks instincts. Sanborn didn't even receive a cheap tender from Chicago because he's a try-hard run-stopper who can be exposed in coverage. Liufau has some warts to overcome that showed last year as a rookie.

Overshown should improve the unit when he comes back depending on how well he can play coming off the injury.

Eberflus has his work cut out for him.
This voice of reason concerning the LB position is one I'd be more inclined to agree with.

I'm skeptical. Sanborn wasn't even tendered by his team because he's a good run stopper but weak in coverage. Murray was traded for cheap because he lacks instincts. And James is a late-round pick. Plus, our top player there is out indefinitely.

This position has even more to prove than CB IMO, where at least we have an All-Pro healthy and spent one of our top picks on a player who would have been taken higher if he had been healthy. Elam is in the same boat as Murray, needing to prove it. And Diggs is in the same boat as Overshown.

it's a strength simply with tyler. the other two just have a chance to push it to dominant
May I remind everyone that Dallas was one of the worst rushing offenses last year with Tyler Smith at LG? To be a strength all 3 guys have to be above average at their positions.

Receiver. I disagree about your assessment on Tolbert. He filled the #2 role last season with Cooks being either injured or underwhelming and led the team in TDs. A full offseason with #2 reps, a healthy starting QB, and a line to block for him would have allowed for a nice bump in production. I think he had the potential to fill that spot, but I'm glad the team made a move for an ultra-talented, proven vet in Pickens.

Dropping Tolbert to the 3rd spot lines him up against lesser talent, creating mismatches at every level of the field. Turpin is more than adequate as a 4 that can stretch the field and Blue can fill that role as well. If Mingo shows any ability to make a difference, this could be the deepest receiver corps Dallas has seen this century.

due to zack martin. last season was a total loss.

First kicker to carry a team to the Super Bowl. No-Schott's plan is for the offense to get to our 45 every possession and let Aubrey kick a FG. Ten to 12 FGs should let us win most games.
60 yd+ Field Goals should be 4 points.

Yup, paper champs! ;)

I think on offense we are strong at C, RG, LG, TE & WR. Wait and see mode on RB (can we get a decent committee out of the 2 vets and 2 rooks) , LT ( does Guyton improve enough, word is he is putting in the work) & RT (which Steele do we get this year)

I think on defense we are strong at DE & CB (when healthy). Wait and see mode on LB (hope is Eberflus does his normal magic with LB's), DT (does Mazi continue to improve in 3rd year)

An added free agent at DE...

Payton Turner

Look, I get it, he was a first round pick of the Saints. He didn’t work out well there, so Jerry Jones signed him for cheap, but hey, at least they did something right?

The Saints took the 6-6, 270 defensive end with the 28th pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Yet after four years of pretty much doing nothing, he decided against picking up his fifth-year option, and he was more than glad to sign a one-year, $2 million guaranteed free agent deal, a sort of prove-it contract with the Cowboys.

Turner went to the University of Houston played in only 31 career games and logged on 50 total tackles, five sacks with 674 defensive snaps.

Cowboys have now acquired five former first-round picks this week:
Dante Fowler Jr.
Payton Turner
Solomon Thomas
Kenneth Murray Jr.
Kaiir Elam

Fowler, Parsons and Kneeland are the only locks as we sit today. Williams is reported to be ready for camp, but you don’t want to rush him back, and Donovan is a rookie, so who knows how he will look.

WR is one of the best groups in the league now, on talent. It remains to be seen if they can get together. Exterior pass rush is also strong. The team is weak up through the middle on defense.

I really like the group of Parsons, Fowler and Ezeiruaku. They could provide some real juice off the edge. The last few years, it has mainly been Parsons creating havoc and other players getting to clean up from the havoc he creates. I hope in particular that Eze makes it clear that if teams are going to double Parsons and leave him singled, Eze is going to get to the QB.

I also like that we have the two DEs who are more in the run-stopper category, Kneeland and Turner. I think that will help the pass rushers not get worn down.

I admit to not holding out much hope for Williams coming off his injury, mainly because he hadn't shown that much before his injury. But with the other players we have, Williams proving me wrong would be a bonus.

That's kinda true but not necessarily the best indicator of this years lineup. Once Hoffman came into the lineup they averaged almost 127 yards \ game. That over the course of a season would but them at 2,156 which would get them in the top third of the league. All without any threat of a running QB which most of the teams in the top 10 have.

I expect Beebe to be significantly better & I think Booker may very well demonstrate power like we haven't seen in a while. So, I'm optimistic all three will be above average.
