Strong Safety in the Draft?

Everyone realizes we have a definit need at RB and CB, and some have argued that the WR position is also a need.

I don't think i have read much about addressing the SS position in draft. God knows we have talked enough about Roy's ability at the position and i really don't want to get in that discussion right now. I think it's safe to say he is staying for at least one more year. However, we don't have anybody behind him now. He can get hurt or get suspended for another horse collar tackle which puts us in a tough situation. I guess if that happens they can always move Hamilin to SS and have Watkins play the FS position but that makes me really nervous. I like Hamlin to stay at FS and QB the defense in front of him.

Either way we need to draft a capable SS in the draft and one can argue it is more of a position of need than WR. We did well with our WR group last year and that was without Glenn. Glenn should be healthier although i wouldn't want to count on him too much. Stanback will have a year under his belt as far as learning the positon and should contribute some. I'm not suggesting that we shouldn't draft a WR at all but rather to state the case for the SS position as a more need postion than WR.

This is not a very deep draft for the safety position but in the second round we can get one of the top three SS in this draft class, i.e., Josh Barrett. We can pick one of the recievers in the 3rd, i.e., Eddie Royal, Andre Caldwell, or Earl Bennett.

Just my 2 cents, let me have it.

WR is a much larger need. We should look to find a back-up SS in the later rounds, with a guy who can excell on special teams right away and be groomed to be able to start should Roy leave or get hurt. Maybe a guy like Silva if he's there in the 6th or 7th like he should be.

Yeah I think we should add a safety in the draft. The position has a bit of a learning curve when making the jump from college to the pros so it would make a ton of sense. I think we have 3 solid safeties on the roster right now, have to ask yourself if its worth using a first day pick on another one. If Reggie Smith slid down to the 2nd round....

Marcus Griffin, Eric Wicks, and Quentin Demps are all interesting 2nd day picks.

I don't know about Eric Wicks but Griffin and Demps are both FS's. I think we have enough at FS, Hamlin, Watkins, and Courtney Brown. But we don't have anyone behind Roy Williams. If we pick a decent one he can also counted on when/if Roy leaves the team.

if Roy has another subpar yr, he'll likely be released. It's possible they could then move Ken Hamlin to SS and have someone lse play FS...so dont rule out FS

on the other hand if Hamlin only plays under the one yr tender and RW has a good to solid yr, they might let Hamlin go and replace him

The WR's in this years draft don't seem to seperate from each other too much. I will be happy getting Kelly, Jackson, or Sweed but at the same time i won't be too disappointed if we get Bennett, Royal, or Nelson. I'm having a hard time picking one or two recievers i like much more than the others.

I think i have read somewhere that the team is excited about Brown and Watkins might still surprise us. I would really be surprised if they draft a FS this year, especially early on. I think after so many years of suffering without a decent FS, Jerry will try and lock up Hamlin before the year is out.

Since we let Killa leave, yes there is a need at SS.

Where in the draft would you try and address that need then?

I think it's possible we let Roy walk and give Watkins a chance now that he's more comfortable, if that's the case. I don't know that we draft one, just in case Roy doesn't pan out. Plus this isn't a great year for safeties anyway.

I wouldn't draft a Strong safety.

I'd draft a Free Safety and move Hamlin to Strong.

Roy could be the middle line backer in the dime and play special teams.

Our secondary was exposed last year. Our starting four (when healthy) could hold it's own vs. standard offensive sets. It took about 1 quarter of football for the league to play us with three wides or isolate just about anyone on RW. I would like to fill two or three roster spots in the secondary through this draft. I would really like to see us get a playmaker with good man-coverage skills. I like Phillips from Miami if he slips.

Quintin Demps played CB the last half of the season last season. He has the speed to play the position and really did shut down that corner when he was put there. It's hard to show it because his stats don't reflec it because he just had so many less passes thrown his way. That sort of flexibility is nice.

But, as Ethiostar mentioned, he's a FS. But run stopping was not Dallas' weakness last season, it was pass defense. The LB corp should be better (assuming Thomas is healthy) and the Dline can keep up their end. I think the of essentially having 2 FS's in the 2ndary could help solidify the pass D.

Whatever happened to the "Darren Woodson approach" to fiding a Safety? He was a LBer at AZ and converted to a great FS. Can't we find a LBer in college that can be converted to SS? I would think someone should be available on day 2 because of his smaller size (by pro standards) that can cover pretty well. There are at least 3 LBers on most every team, but only 2 safties, so the #'s are in our favor to find a "convertible"...

Hard to find a LB quick enough, smart enough with good enough hips to convert to SS.
