Stuff I learned today

I learned that people tried to steal Elvis Presley's body from the cemetery when he passed away.

Wild to think about that.

Young MC, the rapper behind "Bust a Move" from the late 80s also wrote "Wild Thing", the song "Tone Loc" was most known for singing.
Definitely a smart move to give those songs to the voice of Tone Loc. I figured someone else wrote Loc's songs. He was one and done. At least it allowed him to grab some movie roles like Ace Ventura.

I learned tonight that cast-iron dutch ovens get extremely hot! I braised some short ribs for dinner(all day cook) and ran out of room on the stove to put it when out of the oven. So, I stacked two kitchen towels on the marble countertop thinking that was a good idea.

About three minutes later, I hear a loud pop. Sure enough, it left an 8” crack in the countertop. Needless to say, the wife isn’t happy and I am probably sleeping.on the couch tonight

The good news is you have to really look for the crack, barely visible.

German WW2 weapons,
I saw a documentary on the V2 missile.
Unlike the v1(the buzz bomb) it was silent.
When it first exploded in England- no one could figure what what just happened
The damage was so massive, sudden and without any audible warning.... they believed it was gas main explosions.

Each v2 required 30 tons of potatoes to produce enough ethanol fuel
&
Because it was new tech with a lot of problems
The v2 killed far more European v2 laborers than it did English

Not last night, but a few years ago I learned that not all Pyrex cookware is the same. I was making shrimp scampi in a 9x13 Pyrex pan. I had done this many times before. I put it in the oven with butter and garlic and when I took it out I placed it on the stovetop and the Pyrex pan literally exploded in my hands. Millions of pieces of the glass were all over the kitchen. I had to throw out the scampi too!

I found out later that pyrex moved their manufacturing to China at some point and when they did the process for making the glass pans changed. Instead of being safe up to 475 degrees, consumers were finding that their pans were failing at much lower temperatures. I don't know if they fixed this or not but I no longer use pyrex in my ovens.

I was shopping one day and picking out some bell pepper in the produce section when some old guy came up to me and told me about the 4 lobes and 3 lobes. He told me one of them was good for eating raw and the other for cooking but I forget which was which. I buy 4 lobes for making stuffed peppers because they can be cut so that both sides sit well in a pan. I buy the 3 lobes for cutting up in a salad or veggie plate.

I only buy red bell peppers though. To me they taste better than the green, yellow or orange peppers. They also have more vitamin C than green bells. Peppers actually contain more vitamin C than oranges, and red bells contain the most vitamin C of all varieties.
