Sturm: David Irving Is About To Break Out

Overall, I think he has a real chance to be something. Of course, he is also an undrafted free agent who is just trying to prove he belongs in the NFL. In other words, the Cowboys are exposed at this position badly because of the suspensions and now must roll the dice on a kid who is largely anonymous across the league and even to many Cowboys fans.

But I liked his 2015 and I like his training camp. Now, the talented youngster has to prove he can handle things in preseason. If he can, he starts opening night. From there, this guy can make a ton of money playing pro football if he keeps doing what he is doing.

Sometimes, all a kid needs is a chance. And he is definitely about to get one.

Very very anxious to see Irving in preseason. I really think the Cowboys FO hit on this player. Love reading this stuff. Thanks for another outstanding article Bob!

Mr. Sturm, thanks for two things:

1. Picking football in the NFL
2. Picking the Dallas Cowboys

After whiffing on Gregory I hope Sturm is right.

Stop sign? I still get a loud chuckle when I recall: Back in High School, my Aunt set me up with a date. The girl was lovely, but tiny. We were driving home from a dance, when she said stop right here. I did, and she got out of the passenger door and grabbed a huge sign and support...opened the back door, and tossed it in the back seat. She said she wanted it for her room. I still laugh about that tiny girl manhandling that large sign!

Irving is one of the defensive players I will be looking at more than others during these games to see his improvement.
He is my pet cat on D this year.

I hope Sturm continues to post his game analysis this year. Great stuff.

No doubt, Irving has the tools to be a great player if he continues to improve his game.

If you look at the plays Sturm provided, most were with him at the 3-Technique where he could use his quickness and length. In some of those plays, he is what we pretend Crawford is.

His ability as a pure end in a 4-3 is something I am not sure about.

Whatever we get from Irving is a plus, he came in an no cost. I think Sturm is onto something with him though. I expect that we will see him moved around a lot as we did a year ago. Obviously he may be more active as a DE to start the season given the loss of Lawrence and Gregory to suspension, but when Tank gets back we just might see him sprinkled in at tackle.

Yes and no

He came at no cost..but the guys who did cost something are giving is nothing..so we need Irving to step up

Lawrence, Irving, Thornton, and Crawford would make for an active front...

I've said all offseason that one of the biggest keys to the DL will be the normal improvement second year players show, its still early in camp but we have already seen that from Irving and Russell.

My pick before the season as the "surprise" player. Had him picked in some thread about starting DL.

It's only his second year as an UDFA, but it was surprising how effective he was inside against NFL guards with his height and quickness. Leverage and technique are what separates the big boys from the young guns inside. Taller players usually have more difficulty inside for that reason, especially a raw 6'7 rookie. But Irving showed up. A lot of it is his quickness off the ball. Its pretty rare for a guy that size, with no experience, that wasn't even drafted, to come in and make splash plays against NFL caliber talent.

DE is a different animal though against NFL tackles. It actually probably served him well to go bang around inside first.

He does have something insane like 37 inch arms which helps against the long armed OT's. Hes going to have a significant advantage against every tackle he faces in that regard. I think Tyron has the longest arms in the NFL and Irving has him beat.

Long arms, quick off the ball, pretty rough, obviously has some strength. Made some plays as a rookie. He has everything you need to succeed. I think he'll be pretty good. He'll start at DE and move around the line. Still got a ways to go, but that's looking like a helluva pickup right about now.
